“What? Do you mean my so called mother made a deal with the person who deceived her and kept her as a side attraction? Is this true?” I asked as I turned to her with raised eyebrows.
This was just getting more and more ridiculous by the second.
Does she mean that she left me as a newborn as well as her wife for a deal she made with a maniac?
“Yes! Sadly, it is true but I had no choice then.” She replied as she stared at the ground.
“What do you mean you had no choice? He had kicked you out a long time ago so how and why did he find you?” Akayla barked with fury in her tone.
I just watched from the sidelines as I didn’t know where to begin to question my mother.
“I thought he had left me a while ago and he said that he truly did.”
“He had come up to me during the sixth month of my pregnancy and offered me a deal. He said that when I had lost my powers suddenly and he cast me out, he had already given up on me. That was until he randomly asked if there was a way to restore a witch’s powers from a captured old witch he wanted to kill off.”
“The witch had said that one’s powers couldn’t be taken away and it could only be sealed off. She had told him that she knew how to unseal the powers so far he didn’t dispose of her.” she narrated while staring straight at Akayla.
“He said that he had then began to search frantically for me as I was the most powerful witch he had ever acquired. He said years passed with him searching and when he had almost given up hope, he finally found me a week earlier.”
“When he approached me, I was adamant on not going anywhere with him. I told him that I didn’t love him anymore and I would never go with him to be an attraction in his circus of madness. He snapped and told me that If I didn’t go, I would regret it dearly. I told him then that he wouldn’t be able to do anything but I regretted that soon after.”
“He went crazy on me and started sending me pictures. That of me and Akayla at the flea market, at the bar I worked, at home, everywhere. Even with that, I was not moved so I ignored it but he soon became more persistent. Pictures of Akayla started flooding in. The one of her at home, asleep, even in the bathroom. There was even one that had a knife hovering over her neck. ” she said with a quivering voice and Akayla gasped.
I felt sick to the stomach as I imagined all the creepy things she just said.
How could someone be so deranged?
“I couldn’t take it anymore and I finally gave in. I met up with him at the place he approached me previously and he told me he would stop all threats if I went with him. I cried and begged that I didn’t want to go at least not with my baby because I didn’t want her to see such a cruel world as soon as she was born. At first he was reluctant to agree but then he caved in and allowed me to stay till I gave birth.”
“I wanted to tell Akayla but he told me that if I so much as let out a peep about all that was going on, he would send all the witches under him to kill Akayla. Powerful or not, Akayla would have never survived the attack alone. I was devastated but I knew I had to go on with his plan if I wanted to protect my baby and my wife. I went through the months with fake smiles and depressing thoughts.”
“Once my child was born I found that Silas had already arranged with the doctor to fake my death. He didn’t even give me a chance to say goodbye or to hold my baby in my arms. He just made me lay there as Akayla cried over my supposed dead body and I couldn’t do anything about it.”
“My heart broke as I watched her sob and I really wanted to reach out and stroke her head and tell her that I was fine but I knew that doing so would jeopardize both her safety and that of my child.”
“I made sure to tell Akayla before I went into labour that she should take care of my child should anything happen to me. After she cried over me, Akayla left alongside my baby as a witches body is kept in a tube for two days till it disintegrates and fades into dust. I had cried my eyes out once she was gone but Silas didn’t care about my plight at all” she said with tears running down her face
“After that I was brought to a large mansion where all the witches he had ever acquired stayed. The work for him the began and the years that followed after my power was unsealed included entertaining people who wanted to see magic, doing consultations of supposedly seeing the future and so on. I worked day in and day out to fulfill whatever wish he had of me.”
“Why didn’t you try to escape?” Frankie asked as he stared at her blankly.
“Well I wanted to but he always held his threat over my head about my wife and child.” She replied
“The only reason I was able to escape was because of a particular witch who was captured a year ago. She motivated and pushed all the witches who are the either old or still young to fight for their freedom since we clearly did outnumber all of Silas’s men. None of us had ever thought of that as we were busy thinking of ways not to die in the missions he gave us sometimes.”
“We finally fought Silas till we finally managed to win the war and escape. Thankfully Silas had been killed in the war and none of us had to fear that he would come searching for us later on. After I left the mansion, I started searching for you and my baby in the town we once lived but I couldn’t find you. I went back to the coven to ask if they knew where you were but they all denied. Thankfully I met an old friend who told me what condition my daughter was in. I didn’t know where Akayla was but I figured if I found my daughter that was one step forward.” She finished.
I felt sorry that she had gone through all that over the years.
“Oh my God! Why? Why didn’t you say anything? Why did you have to do tha all on your own? Why did you suffer so much for me? I could have taken care of it by myself! I could have been there for you if I had known what you are going through.” Akayla cried as tears streamed down her face.
I just covered my mouth with my hands as I didn’t know what to say. My mother had gone through so much just to protect me. She hadn’t even been able to carry me once I was born.
“I couldn’t tell you because I couldn’t risk your safety as you mean so much to me. It was better to carry all the burdens on my head than to let you die.” She stated as she gazed lovingly at Akayla.
“I really have missed you over these years and I had lost hope that I will ever be reunited with you and my baby girl.”
Tears were striding down her face at this point and I felt my heart well up that Akayla had finally reunited with my mother.
Akayla got down from the bed and started walking unsteadily towards my mother. Once they were close to each other they gazed at each other for a while before finally hugging.
With stiffled sobs, they whispered sweet things to each other. I watched the scene unfold before me and I felt really happy for them.
Once they were finished hugging to their satisfaction my mother disentangled herself from Akayla and turned towards me.
“My child! I haven’t been in your life and I know that it might take time for you to accept me but I am willing to try to make up for all the years I missed. I just want to hug you just for once. Can I?”
I felt a bit uncomfortable but seeing the expectant face of her and Akayla, I had to give In. I hugged her not because I had accepted her, but because I felt for her with all the struggles she faced.
I didn’t hug her for too long because I felt a bit uncomfortable but it was a step at least.
She gazed at me with so much care in her eyes but it just made me fiddle with my fingers a bit.
What was wrong? Wasn’t I supposed to instantly start craving such adoring looks? Why did I feel immensely uncomfortable?
Thankfully she looked away from me and redirected her attention to Akayla.
I needed to learn how to accept her bouts of affection.
Frankie tugged at my hand and it was then that I remembered that he had been standing there all along. He didn’t have any expression on his face and it made me wonder what was going on in his mind especially after witnessing all this.
“What are you thinking?” I asked Frankie in a whisper.
“Well…..” He started but froze soon after.
He stayed like that for a few seconds before his eyes widened. His grip seems to tighten on my hand as he sharply looked at me.
“What is wrong?”I asked in panic.
He stayed silent for a bit but he soon started speaking.
“Paula! The elders have somehow found out that you are a witch and they are demanding an audience with you.”
“What?”
