Paula
“How do you know so much about ancients?” I asked my mother with narrowed eyes.
“Well…” she trailed off and it increased my suspicions about her.
Something seemed fishy about her knowledge but I just couldn’t pinpoint what it was at all
“In my coven, a lot of people are not aware of ancients and what happens when they take over but I am aware because I witnessed my best friend change into one.” She explained as she averted eye contact.
“You did? Which of your friends exactly? How old are you exactly? I thought an ancient came every thousand years? I’m seriously confused.” I blurted as I bombarded her with questions.
“Slow down there, Paula.” Frankie chided as he held my hand and tried to get me to calm down.
“Sorry” I replied when I realized that I was too hyper.
She sighed.
“I get that you don’t feel comfortable around me neither do you trust me, but I wouldn’t lie about this.” She said, looking directly into my eyes.
I averted my eyes because her words didn’t move me in the least bit as something in me kept denying all her shows of affections.
I was sure that if it was before now, I would have been quick to accept all her love and it would have made me immensely happy that I had a mother. Now though, I realized that since I began my journey on finding strength, I had become more skeptical on trusting or accepting the help of anyone.
“One of the older mentors who was my friend, her powers got awakened really late. The symptoms started showing little by little till one day she just snapped and her powers manifested for a whole minute. It was a really strong surge that left a very devastating aftermath in its wake.” She said and her eyes welled in tears.
“That day was just like any other and we couldn’t have imagined that such a tragic even would happen. Our group of friends went to the lake that we always frequented to chill out and it was all great and all that but it suddenly changed.”
“How did it change?” Frankie asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Well, the mages were being goofy like they always were when she suddenly flipped out and lashed out at them. She called them all sorts of foul names that were rather appalling. She was a kind soul that tried to help as much people as she could so I found it really difficult to believe that she would say things like that.”
“The others were angry at her outburst and tried to question her bizarre behavior but she wasn’t saying anything. Soon we found out why.”
“She had been trying to contain herself but the incessant bickering and blaming of my other friends made her snap. A power surge escaped her and everything within a two mile radius of her were flung backwards. Some….” She trailed off with tears falling from her face.
“Some what?” I asked in anticipation when I found her pause to be too long
“S… some were lucky to be close standing where there was no danger of any sorts while some were not. When we were able to get back to our feet, I saw the bodies of some of my friends, either broken by rocks or pierced by trees. The most bizarre fact was that all the people that died were the mages she had lashed out at previously.” She announced and my heart skipped a beat.
Was I going to become so out of control that I would kill the people close to me out of anger? I don’t want to be that way at all.
“I’m sorry for your loss but can you please explain to us how any of that has any correlation to Paula or her change in attitude today? That story just proves that your friend had anger issues deep down and she lacked control over her powers.” Frankie announced in a cold tone.
I could tell that he was totally not moved by the story nor was he moved by her delay in getting to the point.
“Sorry. After that, the council isolated her and seeing as I was the only one brave enough to offer to help, they allowed me to watch over her and report my findings to them. They had seen ancients over the years but she was the first on to kill a person not to talk of four people. I did as I was told and watched over her. I watched her transformation into an ancient with my own two eyes.”
“I saw her struggle with alter egos just like you just did and once I told the elders, they said it was normal. They said that all the ancients had to battle with their ancient side for dominance and that if they were not able to win, which had happened quite a few times, the person becomes completely evil and uncaring. They stated that the solution that they had used for that was to join forces with witches of different covens, small or big to create a spell to turn such an ancient into stone because if they are allowed to roam the world, there will be utter chaos.” She explained and my face turned pale at her explanation.
So she was telling me that I had an evil side in me that was fighting for domination and that if I didn’t win, I would wreak havoc on the world. Oh my God! Could this day get any worse?
Immediately I finished that line of thought, the door swung open and one of Frankie’s subordinate rushed in with a grim face.
Oh my God! It seemed as if I have jinxed us. From the look on his face, this day has surely gotten worse.
“What is the matter now? Don’t you have the decency to knock?” Frankie barked at the man.
“My Alpha….” he said as he bowed.
“My Apologies for my rude entry but you have to see this.”
“What is it again?” Frankie barked then sighed while rubbing his head.
“Just lead the way.”
The man led Frankie, I and Kayla towards the entrance of the packhouse.
“so what is it this….” Frankie said but he trailed off once he looked up.
I followed his line of sight and what I saw, made my face turn pale.
