Frankie
My sense of smell heightened and I could perceive a strange scent in the air. I focused on differentiating what it was as I walked towards where my subordinate was taking me.
I was already tired of all the surprises that were going down almost every week at this point. Can’t one go one whole week without being called upon to view something surprising? I say that because most of the surprises are not good at all. I wonder what this one will be?
The scent of fresh blood mixed with the scent of someone familiar.
What the hell? Fresh blood? That was definitely not a good sign.
“Okay, what is going on this t…..” I started but trailed off once I looked up towards the direction that my subordinate was pointing.
Oh my God.
My eyes widened in disbelief as I stared at what was before me.
It was a dead body that had its head covered in a duffel bag.
It might be confusing why I had to look up to see a dead body. The thing is that the body had been hung by a rope to the neck on a pole. Two poles were stuck to the ground and one was lying horizontally on both of them. the body had been tied by a short rope in the middle and blood was dripping from all sides of it.
It was a truly disturbing sight, even though I have seen them in a lot of wars.
How could someone do something like this to a person? Do they have no respect whatsoever for the sanctity of a dead wolf?
I clenched my fist in anger till they turned white.
“Pull it down and lay it down on the ground so that we can identify it. Also, I will need an explanation on how a person was able to walk all the way to my pack house with a dead body and you didn’t find it suspicious or apprehend that person. I mean, it is a dead body for Christ sake!” I barked at all the warriors that were busy spectating.
“Frankie, calm down” I heard Paula say besides me as she held my hand.
That was when I remembered that she had come out with me in the first place. She didn’t look scared at all and she looked rather calm. The fact that she was not in the least bit fazed by this showed how far she had come in her journey of finding strength.
I couldn’t find what to reply to her so I just nodded.
She squeezed my hand in response.
My men immediately got to work and they went towards the pole. I watched as the body was lowered from the pole before it was dragged to where I was standing.
There it was again! It reeked of a familiar scent but the fresh blood was disrupting my sense of smell.
I examined the body up close and I noticed that the body had a feminine build. My heart beat picked up as a foul though snaked its way into my mind.
It surely can’t be!
I shook all those thoughts out of my head and signaled for them to unearth the body and identify the person. As they were removing the bag from her head, the scent of the person hit me and my heart sank.
No! there must be something wrong with my nose.
“There is nothing wrong with your nose. I can also perceive it. It is….” Black trailed off in my head as the bag was lifted from the dead body’s head.
I could faintly hear Paula’s gasp as well as the exclamations of multiple people in the room.
It was her.
It was Anne!
Even though I was expecting it, as I had recognized her scent earlier, it still knocked the air out of me.
I didn’t want to believe it but it was all displayed right in front of my eyes. I had thought I lost her before and now I really did lose her. Guilt filled me at the fact that I didn’t even protect her even though she just escaped death recently. I was too caught up in my own world and believing that she was a betrayer to actually care about protecting her.
“How did she die? Was it Xayden again? Did he do this to her and also inhumanly disrespect her body? If he did, I was tired of all his jabs. I would finally act on my words. I would disregard the blood we shared and wage war against him till one of us were standing. I will make him….” I thought but trailed off when I felt Paula squeeze my hand.
What was I thinking? Paula was pregnant at this point and any unnecessary stress for her would put her life in jeopardy. I might have allowed her to train and all that but she was doing that only under my supervisions. If I started a war now, it might harm her. It was too risky, especially with the issue of her ancient alter ego that just popped up.
Now I was torn on what to do.
Should I wage war on Xayden for the loss of my friend. Even though we had grown apart a bit, she was still a friend I held dearly to my heart?
OR
Should I just take the brunt of this unholy act that Xayden committed and forget about all of it just to protect Paula and her unborn baby?
I was torn on what decision to make but something happened that made the decision for me.
“Frankie,” Paula called as she squeezed my hand once more.
I snapped out of my thoughts and looked towards her but I found that she was staring in another direction. I followed the direction of her eyes and that was when I noticed something I didn’t notice before.
It was a note.
The note was pinned to Anne’s forehead with a nail.
“What the hell? Why would Xayden nail something to her forehead.” I thought as I felt anger flood me once more at how he would defile her body in such disturbing ways.
I heard Paula gasp and I looked at her immediately to check if something happened.
“What’s wrong?” I asked her in panic.
“Read the note Frankie” she instructed with a raspy voice that was filled with an emotion that I couldn’t identify.
I looked towards the note again and this time I squinted my eyes in a bid to identify what was written there and that was when I saw it.
All the blood in my body ran cold and I felt my heart shatter.
She was my pawn all along. I was surprised that you weren’t able to figure out that she was the mole in your pack house. I still wonder why you are the Alpha king when you can’t even spot such tiny details. Well, I killed her because she couldn’t fulfil the one task, I sent her there for. That was to break you and Paula apart. Enjoy the knowledge of knowing that your supposed best friend was one of my people, well that was before I killed her. HAHAHAHA. Hate, Xayden your brother.
That was the content of the note.
I felt my whole world crumble before my eyes.
“How could I have been so stupid? I saw the signs but I kept stalling so much that she almost came between I and Paula. I truly am a dunce for letting my emotions get in the way of my basic instincts and knowledge.” I thought berating myself.
“How could I have let this happen?” I questioned myself outwardly as I stared at the dead body of who was supposed to be my friend.
“That is also a question I would like to know. How could you have been so stupid to let this go on? And to say that I was banking on your useless self to protect me. What a waste. Well its good that the bitch is dead and gone as now I can finally have peace of mind” I heard a familiar voice say.
What the hell?
I looked towards the direction of the speaker and I was surprised to see that it was Paula who had said such a rude remark.
She looked the same nut she had a very malicious glint in her eyes that was rather unsettling.
“What are you staring at me with surprise for huh? You already know who I am so why the act?” she remarked snarkily as she twisted her mouth in distaste.
“Paula?” I called out cautiously.
Was this what I thought it was? Was she….
“Yes. It is I in the flesh. I am just a cooler and more open to see the trashy truths of the world. I just exist to right the wrongs that this incapable weak body is unable to. I am here to rid this world of garbage and all the things that are unsightly. In short, I am your worst enemy” she said before her mouth curled into a grin that caused a fear to spring up in me.
What the hell?
