My nerves were tighter than a drum, but I forced myself to stand with measured calm.
"Nathan," I demanded, voice sharp as a blade, "where were you?" My eyes then snapped to Daniel. "And you—what's your business here?"
Daniel rubbed his temple. "I tried keeping my wits when they forced us below deck, but everything went black. Woke up slumped in some corner—memory's patchy at best."
Nathan gave his account with painstaking care, each word measured.
My brow furrowed as I studied their faces—Daniel nodding along like some damned puppet.
Then came the urgent shout from above decks—Nathan summoned. The moment he turned, a rusted wire snagged his arm, tearing flesh. Blood welled shockingly fast, staining his sleeve crimson.
"Christ!" I hissed. "Watch your step—" But before I could follow, Daniel's grip clamped on my wrist like a manacle.
His eyes bored into mine. "Listen good," he said, slow as molasses in January. "Never left this spot. Not once."
Two stories. One liar.
By the time I got home, my skull was splitting—every suspicious detail ricocheting inside like buckshot.
Nathan and Daniel remained in custody, giving statements they'd probably be polishing all night. When the captain finally turned to me, I laid out my theory between gritted teeth.
The old man chewed on it forever before just clapping my shoulder. "Get some rest, kid. We'll ring you."
The hospital smelled like antiseptic and despair. Vivian lay still as death—except for her lips. Twitching. Forming silent words.
When I bent close, nothing came.
My fingers trembled against her fevered brow. God, she looked breakable—like someone had taken my tough little sister and replaced her with this shattered doll.
This op had broken things in me too. Suddenly the thought of any man touching me made my skin crawl—and I was the hardened one. What fresh hell was Vivian enduring?
Rage curdled in my gut. That animal still walked free while she—
I stood abruptly. Needed air. Needed to fetch her some decent food.
Then—
Vivian's eyes flew wide, bloodshot veins spiderwebbing across the whites. A scream tore from her throat, raw as an open wound:
"It's the King! He means to kill the King!"
The words hit me like a sucker punch, rooting me to the spot.
