Before I could utter a word, my sister collapsed again—like her soul had been violently torn from her body.
I called for the nurse in a panic. Only after they confirmed her vitals were stable did I dare step away.
Who was the king?
I wasn't sure. The four of us had played Monarch's Gambit before. Since my codename was Evelyn, they'd always joked that my husband, Nathan Roland, was the king.
But Daniel Roland—the one with freakish luck—always seemed to draw the king card.
Nathan would playfully "defy the king's orders," but he never won in the end.
The king wants to kill the king.
Did that mean Nathan had tried to overthrow Daniel? Had he turned traitor, manipulated him, and when that failed, decided to eliminate him?
Was that what really happened in the storage room? Had Nathan been trying to get rid of Daniel in secret?
My gentle husband… had he really wanted to kill his own brother?
Then it hit me. I stood frozen, realization dawning, before finally calling the captain.
"Captain, it's me. Yes… it's him."
My voice was steel. He was the real monster.
The captain told me Daniel had already confessed.
I sat across from Daniel and Nathan, the three of us together for the first time since the operation—still, silent, suffocating.
"Is there anything else you want to say?"
My words dripped with disgust.
I couldn't believe the bright, laughing man we'd known all these years was, at his core, a predator.
I didn't want to believe it.
But Daniel, seeing no reason to keep up the act, just leaned back with a smirk—utterly unrepentant.
Nathan and I said nothing. We walked out in silence.
"What else are you hiding from me?" I hissed, my glare burning into Nathan.
"This is absolutely the last thing."
He reached for me, his voice soft, coaxing. I gave him a faint smile.
Then I pressed a gun to his chest—right over his heart.
"And what about this?"
Nathan's smile shattered.
"...When did you figure it out?"
The captain's team swarmed in, weapons trained on him.
"Honestly? From the second we stepped into this place, something about you was off."
"Nathan, your brother Daniel might cover for you, but I won't. Justice may be slow, but it always comes. You will pay for those girls' deaths."
Even knowing the truth, this was still the man I'd shared my life with.
As I turned to leave, my laughter cracked into tears.
Nathan had been watching me from the shadows all along. That was the first red flag.
No matter what was announced, no matter how convincingly he faked shock—his eyes knew.
Maybe Daniel had never betrayed us. I still didn't know how Nathan had twisted him into this.
The whole aftermath had been a performance—both of them playing us.
Daniel had been injured, but Nathan had faked his wound too—just enough for the wire to tear it open later.
I'd been torn between them, my sanity unraveling.
What finally woke me up was my sister mentioning Monarch's Gambit. That's when I realized—they were in this together.
The king wants to kill the king. Not that one king had killed the other.
It meant the two kings had conspired—they wanted to kill, but hadn't.
That dagger was one-of-a-kind. But that didn't mean Nathan, who'd crafted it, couldn't have made another.
When I stepped out of the police station, the sunlight washed over me—warm, real, free.
