Today we were presenting in English class. It was a small thing I'd been working on at Miles' house for a few days. I was nervous, but when I went up somewhere in the middle of all the other students, it turned out to be better than expected.
Now I was just sitting there doodling and waiting for it to end. However, I did watch Miles' presentation.
He was talking about some playwright from around Shakespeare time, when he trailed off.
He stared off at the back wall. He chewed like he had gum, but the teacher didn't allow gum in class. It lasted long enough that people were starting to whisper, and I got worried.
I would say it lasted about ten or fifteen seconds, but I wasn't really counting. Then he shook his head and sighed. He cleared his throat and continued from where he'd left off like nothing had happened.
When he came back and sat beside me, I leaned over and whispered, "what was that?"
He shook his head, avoiding my eyes as he said, "it was nothing don't worry about"
Despite his words, I couldn't keep my mind off of it. It was obviously something. By the end of the class I was pretty agitated.
When the bell rang, I followed him out. "Miles. That wasn't nothing. What was that?"
He ignored me and walked into the crowd. I tried to follow, but I had lost him in the crowded hallway of students. I sighed, deciding to go to my next class and bug him at lunch instead.
When lunch came around, I was relieved. I hadn't seen him since english and I kept thinking about it.
I sat at our table alone, waiting.
He was around ten minutes late.
I asked him where he was and if he was avoiding me but he denied it and waved off the other question. So I pestered him more. I felt kinda bad, but I really wanted to know and what happened during his presentation was definitely something.
It took a while, but eventually he just sighed. "Casey." he said sternly, making me shut up. "I'll tell you, ok? It's not a big deal."
He took another bite of his food, seeming to gather his thoughts. I waited impatiently, and just when I opened my mouth to say something, he spoke instead.
He spoke with a kind of resigned tone. "It's a medical thing. I have epilepsy. That during class was a small seizure, called an absence seizure. It wasn't anything harmful, and I'm fine."
He went back to eating and I mused over this. "Then why haven't I seen you have a seizure before? And I thought seizures were those things when you flop around on the floor? Not to be rude or anything"
He nodded, "The 'flopping around on the floor', as you so nicely put it, is a seizure. It's called a tonic clonic seizure. There's different kinds, something to do with where it is in your brain or something. And you probably have seen a seizure, actually. Sometimes they're just so small that it's unnoticeable.
But I don't have that many cause my medicine suppresses most of them. But you probably should research what to do incase I do get a tonic clonic one, I wouldn't be able to explain well enough."
