I hitched my duffle bag onto my shoulder, smiling at Sarah, my last foster mom.
I actually really ended up liking it in that house.
She was crying, talking about how she would keep in touch. And how much she'd miss me. I wasn't really sure what to do, I'd never really been one for emotional moments.
Greg, my foster father, was rubbing her back, also close to tears.
Hailey, well she was a mess.
At first she was running around, pestering me, asking if I had my toothbrush or my hat. At one point she kept asking about my underwear, claiming 'it's a very important piece of clothing and hard to live without!'
Then she started hugging me so much I had to push her off to do stuff, or even move.
Yesterday, the day before I was set to leave, she wrote out this really long thing. She had me sign it, claiming she could use it against me in court if I broke the promise. The thing was filled with stupid stuff like, you'll call me once every two weeks, you will come to my birthday parties and whatnot. I took a picture of it, partially cause I wouldn't be able to remember it all, and partially cause it was cute, and totally blackmail for her when she was older.
Now she was just clinging to me, sobbing.
I sighed, giving Hailey a good long hug back. Then I went to Sarah and Greg and gave them each a long good hug too.
I stepped back, clearing my throat. "I- uh, thank you. This was the best home I've had."
This caused everyone, who all had calmed down a little, to burst into tears all over again.
I gave them each one last hug, and they all clung to me so tight I was worried for my ribs.
"Well . . . I've gotta go, or I'll be late."
