"have a good day."
y/n bid goodbye to the receptionist at the front desk of the hospital as she walked through the large glass doors. she took in her surroundings once she was outside and saw multiple people rushing to their destination and cars stuck in morning traffic.
'mornings are always so busy.' she thought to herself. the busy city was something she disliked about the mornings, but hearing the singing birds and feeling the cool breeze made it worth it.
the sound of the doors of the hospital opening, made her turn around and she was surprised to see a familiar face. "iida what are you doing here?" she asked her peer. "i was visiting my brother. may i ask what you were doing here?" he readjusted his glasses as he awaited her answer.
"visiting my dad." y/n said loud enough for only him to hear. "i see." he nodded slowly before speaking again. "i'm assuming you're on your way to school as well?" he asked and y/n nodded in response. "yup. i was about to make my way to the train station."
"same here. mind if i walk with you?"
y/n thought for a little bit and decided that she wouldn't mind a little company. "not at all." she replied and the two began their walk to the train station.
unfortunately for y/n, it started to rain not too long after. "damn it." she mumbled as she took her book bag off of her back and searched inside of it. "you need help?" iida asked as he watched her dig in her overly cluttered bag.
she shook her head and looked in his direction. "no i'm looking for an umbrella, but by the looks of it.." she dug in her bag once more before coming to a conclusion. "i must've left it at home."
confusion spread across her face as an umbrella suddenly appeared in front of her. she looked over to see that iida was giving it to her. "here." he said. "i couldn't." she objected.
"i say you should." he replied.
"but what about you?"
"i will be fine i have a hood on." noticing that he indeed did have on a jacket with a hood, y/n reluctantly took the umbrella and said "thanks." as she opened it.
they continued making their way to school, but were stopped by a group of people. "you two go to u.a. right?" a girl who wore a brightly colored allmight shirt asked the two. "yes we do." iida replied. y/n only nodded as she was wondering who these people were.
"i knew it! hey, you both did great at the sports festival!" a guy in the back of the group exclaimed as he stuck a thumbs up. "thank you." both iida and y/n said at the same time. they just wanted to get to school, but we're stuck talking to the group for another five minutes.
"finally we can go." y/n said once the group had walked away. "yes, it was nice to see people recognized us from the festival, but if they would've stayed a second longer, i'm afraid we would've started running out of time." iida added.
nodding in agreement, y/n couldn't help but notice how easy it was for her and iida to befriend each other. it made her wonder why they weren't friends before, then she remembered the entrance exam and felt a bit embarrassed. 'yea let's just forget about that.' she thought.
a comfortable silence fell between the two as they continued their journey to the train station. everything seemed normal, but y/n couldn't help but feel like she was being watched. when she looked back, she could've sworn she saw someone with a patchwork face but didn't think twice about it as it could've just been someone's quirk.
y/n and iida saw u.a. in the distance as they trekked up the mountain. "i still don't understand why they don't have shuttle buses to transport us up this big ass mountain." y/n said, her legs starting to hurt. "it doesn't help that it's raining as well." she added, tightening her grip on the umbrella.
"i don't see anything wrong with this. we're heros in training remember, the extra cardio will help us." iida enthused. y/n deadpanned as she looked over to see the speed quirked boy power walking like it was no problem. "as for the rain, there's nothing we can do about it."
"well that's easy for you to say."
she looked up ahead and saw a familiar head of green curls. "is that midoriya?" she questioned, narrowing her eyes to try and see clearer. "or a moving tree?"
iida stifled a laugh as he looked forward as well. "don't be silly. of course, that's midoriya." his actions didn't go unnoticed by y/n as she raised a questioning brow at him. "did you just laugh or am i going crazy?"
"what? oh would you look at the time, we're going to be late if we don't hurry up!" and with that he sped off towards the school, scaring the freckled face boy up ahead in the process. "midoriya! hurry up you don't want to be late!"
"ahh! but iida we have 10 minutes till class starts!"
"that's too late!" determined to make it to class in time, iida rushed forward, leaving midoriya behind with a confused expression. "that was a little strange."
"it sure was." an unexpected voice agreed with him causing him to get scared again. "ahh! oh it's just you l/n."
"sorry, i didn't mean to scare you midoriya." y/n apologized as she walked next to him, matching his pace. "no it's fine. my heart can handle a couple of scares." he scratched his head as he muttered the last part. "i think."
noticing the bandages wrapped around his hands and arms, concern filled y/n's eyes. "you healing ok?"
"yea look." midoriya outstretched his arms and moved them up and down. "i can move them with ease and it doesn't hurt. so when i go to recovery girl later, she'll probably take the bandages off."
"that's good. just be careful."
"of course. oh! i just remembered." the greenette took his backpack off. y/n watched curiously as he searched inside of it. what was he looking for? she wasn't sure. "there it is." midoriya pulled out his burnt notebook and a pencil then closed his bag and put it back on.
"i wanted to ask you about this after the sports festival, but you disappeared." he said, flipping through pages of sketches and analysis of his peers and pro heros.
once he found the page with a sketch of y/n on one side and paragraphs of information on the other, he looked towards y/n with curiosity and excitement in his eyes. "do you think you could tell me more about what you did in your fight versus kacchan?"
"oh uhh... i'm not comfortable with talking about that."
"oh, i understand l/n. you don't have to tell me."
"thank you for understanding, midoriya. i'll tell you one day for sure though."
they had made it inside the school building and saw iida at his locker. "here's your umbrella iida. thank you for letting me use it." y/n said as she held it out for him to grab. "my pleasure l/n." he grabbed it and placed it in his locker alongside his shoes.
y/n went to her locker and switched out her shoes. when she was done, she turned around to see if iida and midoriya wanted to walk to class together, but saw that they were talking. 'i'll leave them be.' she thought before making her way down the giant hallway.
"you only got two offers?" ochaco questioned as she looked back and forth between the board and y/n with a puzzled look on her face. they had just learned about internships and the number of offers that each student got was shown on the board.
everyone in class 1-a was confused about how the person who got first place only had two offers. "yea how does that even work?" tobio asked as he walked up to his friends. y/n just shrugged. "i don't know maybe it's because no one wanted to work with someone who almost killed their classmate."
bakugo shook his head at her words as he walked past her desk. "nature bitch." she looked at him with a brow raised. "you didn't almost kill me, so stop saying that." he leaned towards her shrinking the gap between them causing y/n to get uncomfortable. "personal sp-."
she was cut off by the hothead in front of her. "you're not a bad person either. you're just a dumbass that has a semi-powerful quirk." he backed away and turned to face the front of the classroom. "was that a compliment?" y/n questioned him.
"no." is all he said before walking to his desk with his hands in his pockets. his response left y/n even more confused. she looked at tobio and ochaco and they just shrugged, not knowing what bakugo meant. 'maybe it was backhanded.' she thought.
shorty after, mr. aizawa walked into the classroom with a stack of papers in hand. he set them down and looked around the room his eyes automatically falling on tobio. "yamada, why aren't you in you're seat?" he asked his student.
tobio slowly walked to his seat keeping the slow movements as he sat down. "i am in my seat mr. aizawa." not willing to put up with the younger males foolishness, aizawa sighed deeply. "i don't have time for this."
after deciding that he wanted to keep his job, aizawa cleared his throat to speak. "even though a select few of you got offers, everyone will be working with a pro. that's also why you all will pick your hero names. make sure you like them."
"or you'll have hell to pay later!" midnight exclaimed as she strolled into the classroom. the pro's presence surprised the students as they all watched her make her way to the front of the class and stand next to aizawa at the podium. "i'll be helping you all pick hero names! whiteboards will be passed out and you'll come up one by one and present what you want your name to be."
many students got excited as they started brainstorming. ideas were shared back and forth between friends and before they knew it, it was time to share. aoyama went first and although the class questioned his decision of "i can not stop twinkling", midnight just shortened it to "can't stop twinkling" and let him keep it.
mina was next and midnight rejected her choice of "alien queen" which made the class question if the rest of their names were good enough. the doubt disappeared when tsuyu announced her hero name as "froppy" which in the class's opinion was a normal name compared to the first two.
tobio was called to the podium next. "i am.. the typhokinesis hero: smoke signal!" he yelled out in all seriousness. y/n covered her mouth and tried not to let her laugh slip out. 'i know he fucking lying,' she thought as she looked over at ochaco and made eye contact with her. the brunette had a forced smile on her face as she held in her laughter. tobio shot glares at his two friends.
"smoke signal?" midnight questioned with her hand on her chin. "you know what i like it!" she exclaimed and gave tobio a thumbs up. he happily made his way back to his seat. "huh?" y/n questioned as she looked at tobio. "she agreed to smoke signal? i- that ain't got nothing to do with me."
"you're just hating because my name is better than yours." tobio said as he pointed at y/n. she looked at him in disbelief and sarcastically said, "right."
others went and their names were good, some questionable, like bakugos. which was at first "king explosion murder", but that got denied and he later changed it to "lord explosion murder", which also got denied. "maybe try being less violent." tobio called out after bakugo went back to his seat for the second time.
"oh shut up, smoke alarm!" the ash-blonde retorted.
"it's smoke signal!" tobio cried out.
the sound of her name being called, made y/n stop laughing at the two hot-headed boy's interaction and turn to look at her teacher. "yes?" she questioned. "it's your turn to share your name." midnight said, motioning the girl to go to the front of the class.
after hearing those words, y/n froze. when she looked down at her whiteboard, all she saw was nothing. it wasn't that she wasn't thinking of a name, she just wasn't sure if the one she had, was good. she scribbled her idea down on the board and made her way up to the podium.
all the staring eyes of her classmates made her even more anxious. she laughed nervously before speaking. "uhh.. hi my hero name is..." she slowly faced her board towards her peers. "the nature hero: gaia." then quickly flipped it back around. it was silent before people started complimenting her and said that they liked it.
y/n sighed in relief and relaxed a little. "like the greek goddess right?" midnight questioned. y/n shook her head. "yea."
"i like it!"
"thank you." y/n walked back to her desk and sat down.
the hero naming session was over and midnight had left. aizawa woke from his nap and was now standing at the front of the class. "you will be given a list of the offers you got and a form to fill out by friday. if you don't hand in this completed form by then, i'll pick who you intern with."
everyone looked through their list and tried to find a hero that piqued their interest. y/n knitted her eyebrows together as she read the two names on her paper over and over again. "what the fuck." she whispered which caught todoroki's attention.
he turned around, looked down at y/n's paper then back up at her. "so you got my father too?" he asked, spooking the girl. "ahh!" not expecting that reaction, todoroki put a hand on y/n's right shoulder and apologized. "my apologies, i didn't mean to scare you."
she looked between the warm hand on her shoulder and the boy in front of her. "it's all good and.." she grabbed his hand and placed it down on the desk. "to answer your question from before, yes one of my offers is your dad. the other to no surprise, is my mom."
"boo, i have neither of them. i wanted to go to the same internship as you." tobio said as he dramatically laid himself down across the desk causing todoroki to move back in his chair and y/n to raise a brow at him. "you did?"
"yes, what kind of question is that?" he looked over at her. "i mean who wouldn't want to spend a week with their best friend? anyway, i like your hero name. it just proves how much of a badass you are."
"i'm a badass?" y/n questioned.
"of course you are!" uraraka exclaimed as she walked up to her friend's desk. "you know how to kick ass and you look good while doing it."
"for real?"
tobio and ochaco shook their heads up and down.
"hey scarface." tobio called out to todoroki as he turned his head to look at him. the two-tone haired boy looked down. "my name isn't scarface, it's sho-"
"yea yea whatever." tobio cut him off as he sat up on the desk and now he was looking down at todoroki. feeling inferior to the half and half boy, he smirked to himself. "you messed up at the sports festival."
"tobio what are you talking about?" y/n asked with a slight hint of annoyance in her voice. she wasn't sure what he was trying to do, but she didn't like it. he turned around. "don't worry about it." is all he said before looking back at the half and half boy.
"what do you mean?" todoroki asked, his head tilted to the side in confusion. sighing dramatically, tobio shook his head side to side. "wow you really don't know?" he pointed at todoroki. "you rejected the best person you'll ever lay your eyes on."
todoroki didn't respond. he didn't know how to. "i don't like where this is going." ochaco whispered to y/n who shook her head in agreement.
tobio's thoughts were clouded with anger and jealousy. all of it built up from the first day of school when y/n grew hopeful of rebuilding her relationship with todoroki. he had only told uraraka that he wished that y/n had never saw him again.
he knew he was being selfish, but he thinks- no he knows that he can treat y/n better than todoroki ever could. he's only in todoroki's shadow because that's y/n's childhood friend. they grew up together so of course, she's going to have a strong attachment to him.
tobio still didn't understand why she still tried even after she's been rejected once. it just seemed like a lost cause to him. why run after someone you'll never catch when you can go to the person who's within your reach?
"i really want to punch you in the face." tobio told todoroki before getting off of the desk. "i'm not going to though because i'd rather not have y/n be mad at me." silence fell over the classroom as everyone watched him grab his things and walk out.
murmurs could be heard across the room as the teens wondered what had just happened. y/n and ochaco looked at each other then grabbed their stuff and ran out after their friend. todoroki sat there alone thinking about what was said.
he felt bad about rejecting y/n at the festival and had been trying to figure out a way to apologize. he even asked his mom for help, when he started visiting her after the festival. he was doing one thing that his mom told him to do, which was actually pay attention and talk to y/n. was it enough though?
"tobio! where are you?!"
y/n called out as she walked around the school grounds. after searching for 10 minutes inside one section of the school, she and ochaco decided to split up. the brunette was searching the inside of the school and y/n was searching the outside.
the rain had started again and her clothes were soaked, but she didn't care. all she could think about was finding tobio. she was on the p.e. grounds where the quirk assessment took place on the first day.
"tobio!" she called out once more. 'wait a minute.' she thought before pulling her phone out of her pocket and going to her contact list. "if he's nearby, i'll hear his ringtone." she hit the call button.
it was hard to hear anything because of the rain, but she still tried. eventually, she heard the faint sound of a phone ringing coming from the small forest of trees next to the field. y/n slowly moved closer and called tobio's phone every time the call cut out.
she could hear the ringtone more clearer once she was near the entrance of the forest. "tobio?" she called out. "go away!" a familiar voice yelled back. "no! you come here or i'm coming in there and dragging you out!"
no response.
"ok i'm coming in. you better not be moving deeper into the forest either!" she watched out for puddles as she slowly crept through the trees. she called his phone once more to make sure she was going in the right direction.
"damn it if yo- tobio!" forgetting about the wet ground, she ran towards her friend who was sitting up against a tree and crouched down next to him. "are you ok? are you hurt? why did you run away? i was scared when we couldn't find you at first!"
"calm down. you sound like both of my moms."
"ok and i'm going to hit you upside your head like both of them! you don't understand how scared i was. you could've got kidnapped! tobio are you even listening? tob- what are you doing?"
"hugging you. now shut up." tobio had wrapped his arms around y/n's waist and placed his head in the crook of her neck. she was taken aback for a second, but hugged him as well. "tobio i-"
"i said shut up."
the two sat there in each other's embrace, the sound of rain hitting the ground was the only thing they heard. "you're soaking wet." tobio joked, making y/n slap the back of his head.
"oww, you didn't have to do that."
"yes i did, now tell me. why did you run away?"
tobio pulled away from the hug and looked at y/n. "god you're so beautiful." he mumbled. "huh? i couldn't hear you over the rain." she said moving her head closer so she could hear better. little did she know, their close proximity was driving tobio crazy.
"i said, can i show you why i ran?" he lied.
"yea, just as long as you help me understand what made you upset."
"close your eyes."
"what? why?"
"just do it please."
"ok i trust you, just don't do anything weird. like slit my throat or something." y/n said as she slowly closed her eyes.
"i'd never do that to you." the feeling of tobio placing one of his hands on the side of her face and the other on her waist, made a shiver go down her spine. she started to get nervous. "h-hey, what are you doing there?"
"relax." before she could respond, she felt wet, but warm lips place themselves on hers. then they disappeared. she sat there, her eyes still closed.
"you can open your eyes." tobio said as he began to move his hand from her face, but was stopped by y/n. "no. i don't know what you did. do it again." she said, actually knowing that was supposed to be a kiss.
"wait what?" he stared at her dumbfounded.
"i said do it again."
tobio wasn't sure if she was acting like she didn't know or if she was being genuine."oh umm ok." he leaned in once more, planning to do a simple kiss like before, but was surprised when y/n kissed back.
'so she did know.' he thought. feeling proud of himself, tobio smirked into the kiss. it wasn't exactly as romantic as he thought his first kiss would be, but he couldn't ask for anything else.
they pulled away out of breath and stared at each other before bursting out into a fit of laughter. "did we really just?" tobio asked. "mhmm." y/n hummed as she nodded.
"i can't believe i had my first kiss with my best friend." he said before pointing at y/n. "same with you right?" she laughed nervously as she looked away. "yea."
'why did you lie to him?' she asked herself internally. 'you're a bad friend. don't tell me you're going to break his heart next.'
"so you were jealous?" she asked, pushing away those thoughts to the back of her mind. tobio sheepishly scratched the back of his neck. "yea you could say that." he then remembered where they were. "we should get back inside though."
y/n nodded. "yea, ochaco might be thinking that we both got kidnapped."
they stood up and looked at their uniforms. their socks and shoes were covered in dirt, as well as her skirt and his pants. worst of all, both of their white button-ups were drenched and see-through.
y/n started freaking out because she left her jacket inside and the school did not need to see her bra. thankfully, tobio had his, which he gave to her. they made their way through the forest and to the entrance of the school. "we are most definitely going to be sick tomorrow."
"yup."
