Kayla’s pov
I stopped short by the threshold of my bathroom when the door to my room threw open. The Lycan king was in sight. He seemed to be impatient to be here, and yet still wanted to be for whatever reason that was.
“Good morning, Alpha,” I curtsied
He didn’t reply, but his eyes roamed my body searchingly. “Are you okay?” They were three words but it took him everything to say it. They were clenched
“Yes, I am.”
“About last night….” His eyes reverted to my neck and I felt a tingle spread through my body as I remembered the bite mark he’d left there. “I didn’t…the bite isn’t a mark, so don't hold on to it.”
I said nothing.
If not for our bargain, I would’ve believed he didn't want to be tied to anyone, but it might also be because of the bargain. But why be arrogant about it?
I tried not to think much of it. After all, I shamelessly had been into it. Even so that I had wished he fucked me. Gods.
I blame the mate bond for that.
“Did you bleed much from it?”
“Uh~no. No, I didn't.”
“Good.”
He gave a stiff nod and then turned away and left my room. Just like that.
I stared after him and yelled inwardly, well that was awkward, what in ten hells was that?!
After dressing I stepped out of the room to my guard. He nodded and I asked, “Are you Lycan always so brute? Like a good morning wouldn’t be bad you know.”
But he just fell into step behind me automatically.
“That’s why we are Lycans, not bloody obedient dogs.” Lycan liked to pride themselves over werewolves when they were just the same family, but different class.
“Hmm,” I hummed and followed him, taking note of the route. “I was thinking of taking our stroll to the edge, I haven’t really seen the pack thoroughly.”
“You are taking a walk as it is and the Alpha has some places you can’t visit.”
Of course, he would say that the Lycan king was smart. My time was running thin. The doctor just took my blood to make sure I was clean, but soon she would return to make sure I was okay to be with the Lycan king and then my cover would be blown.
I felt my chest tighten from that and fear took root. No, don’t go down that way, K, we will make it out of here.
“Why? Do you know how many girls will die for my spot? No, I ain’t going anywhere. I absolutely adore this. I intend to keep it for a very long time,” I said, convincing my guard. I didn’t know the facial expression I had on but he smiled.
“Typical werewolves,” he snorted. I thought that was all he had to say until he added, “That is the reason he can’t allow you near the border, it’s dangerous. Especially for you.” He pinned me with a pointed gaze as he said that.
What could possibly be dangerous or who would dare defile the Lycan king? I was about to ask that when someone spoke softly from beside me, “The border is not for pretty things like you.”
I turned to the new voice that joined us. Tall, hot with the usual Lycan beauty. My guard bowed to him, “Lord Cartier.”
“I have her now, you can return to your post.” The Cartier guy said.
My guard nodded and then moved back. Cartier turned to me. How rude of him to interrupt my interrogation with him, now I would have to work my brain to have him answer me again seamlessly.
I quirked my brow at this Cartier, perhaps he could help.
“What is it about the border?” I asked, he dropped his gaze to me as if surprised by my question.
“You don’t know?”
Smiling softly, I shook my head. Either that or I would roll my eyes and I couldn’t do that. I must act the part of an obedient little werewolf.
“Aren’t you a cute one? The newest toy for the Lycan king.” He commented. His comment did not bite me the least bit, but I was curious. “He always has that many toys?”
“Of course. A man has to release himself somehow.” He hummed without taking the bait to my question. “Want to go somewhere fun?” He asked with a slight raise of his eyebrows, eyes twinkling with mischief.
Who is this man?
I should avoid that glint but I definitely wanted to find out. The Lycan king, I noticed, did not have a mischief to his eyes, he had a stare that could murder you and I found myself thinking of the way his eyes glowed from yesterday night.
His growls and moans as well and the way he grinded against me, I wanted to fan it out and see more of that.
When I turned back my guard was some steps behind, though still following me.
“How many toys has the king had before me?” I asked as he led the way to hell knows where.
“Many, and more to come after you.” He chuckled, he clearly enjoyed the look of distraught on my face. “I’m curious about something though. Everyone is. The king has never taken anyone as his bride, not even Vivian.”
Vivian, I stopped and stared at him. “What do you know about Vivian?”
“Oh, you mean the little crow girl, looking for dead bodies to pick on. You seem to be the best on her plate at the moment. You took the king from her.”
She could have him back once I'm gone. I didn't dare say that out loud.
I was invested because he knew more and all I needed was information. It doesn't matter who gave them to me. Not even when the supposed man was being too chatty.
“Really?”
“That’s very bad of you Kayla, you don’t enter a Lycan territory and not do your research. When the late Lycan king was alive, Vivian had been given to Lance to be his bride and Luna. I cannot say she wouldn’t want to take that back from you.”
I whirled around and almost bumped into him. “How do you know my name?”
“Who doesn’t?” He leaned close, so close that I could see the way his irises twitched and the little details on his face. “You are the first of your kind.” He grinned.
“We are here.” He announced and I whipped around to stare at the training ground.
“What are we doing here?” I demanded even as I stared at the scene of female Lycans fighting and throwing punches.
His fingers pushed my hair from my face and inched closer, though he wouldn’t dare touch me for some reason.
He whistled calling the ladies attention and out of the harem of women, Vivian spun and came strutting around.
I looked at him and he winked and leaned back.
“You,” She sang, “what are you doing here?”
“Taking a walk,” I nudged my head and for some reason, she smiled.
“And that is supposed to be the Lycan king’s bride.” She circled me, “Taking a walk, tell me, do you know the first rule of being a Lycan queen or a Lycan at all.”
The others were watching now with curious eyes.
“You are taking a walk. Let me break this down for you. This isn’t your usual pack. Here, to be anything, you earn your place.” She held a finger before me, “and you haven’t earned yours.”
I watched as Vivian moved back to the arena, all eyes trained squarely on her. Then my eyes darted to Cartier beside me who was enjoying the little show he wanted, like he was trying to prove a point, but to whom exactly.
“We should duel.” She spoke so low that I thought I heard her wrong. “You and I before the people you might one day rule.” It must’ve been funny even to her because she laughed.
I didn’t want to stay here and I most definitely didn’t want to duel her. It was insane.
“What do you say?!” She cheered for the women behind her. “Let’s see what the bride to the king has to display. Wits, strength, or just something else…” she mouthed or just a whore at me.
My heart thumped in my chest and I attempted to turn away, a very cowardly thing to do, but the best.
But I heard the Lycan king’s voice call out. “Very well, go on with it then.”
“What?” The word left me before I could process it. When I stared up at the Lycan king, those fierce hatreds were back in place.
“You will fight her.”
