                    Sawyer’s POV
I watched on mostly in silence as my brother debated on the right way to bring Maeve back. They were arguing with each other and I wasn’t about to be involved in the conversation they were having.
It’s been a week since we learned about Maeve’s new life and we hadn’t done anything about it other than fight over what tactic we would employ in luring her back much to my disgust.
We were running out of time with each day we wasted unsure about how to go about solving our conundrum.
“It’s been a week since she was located and all we’ve done since then is fight and argue amongst ourselves.” I raised my voice slightly above theirs, forcing them into silence. “If this was what the outcome would be, why the hell did we waste our time on it?”
I glared at the both of them as neither refused to speak.
“You’re acting like cowards right now,” I wagged my finger at their faces. “And it’s disgusting to see. We’re supposed to be the Templar brothers, the heirs to the throne not some scared wolves unsure about fighting over what they want.”
“Do not question our commitment to the cause, we’re much a part of this as you are,” Zane began in a menacing tone.
“Cut off the bullshit and spare me your righteous talks, Zane,” I scoffed, waving him off. “If you’re so committed to this, you have to act like it not lock yourself in here and argue all day.”
“What has gotten you so riled up, Sawyer?” Ethan spoke this time, his eyes narrowing at me. “You’re angry over something and it’s not us, so what is it?”
I raised my hands in the air, dumbfounded at their lack of understanding. How couldn’t they see what was staring them right in the face?
“You want to know?” I bit out, my eyes blazing. I could feel every thread of my emotions becoming loose.
“You need to get a grip of yourself,” Zane warned, taking a couple of steps towards me.
“I’m scared, Zane. I’m scared that before we figure this whole situation out, it would be too late and father would’ve replaced us!”
“If that’s what you’re so worried about, I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Zane assured me but I wasn’t buying any of it.
“You don’t understand,” I shook my head. “Father doesn’t make mistakes or give empty threats.”
“You’re right, but—“
“We need to find Maeve and we need to do it now.” I cut him short, not wanting to hear anything form of excuse from him.
“We wanted to talk to you about that,” Zane began after a brief moment. “Ethan and I have been discussing the report we got from the investigator.”
“You don’t think she’s the one?” I looked between them.
“Take it easy, man. We didn’t say any of that, we believe she’s the one but I want you to listen to what Zane has to say,” Ethan said, urging me to remain calm. “Can you do that for me?”
I remained silent and crossed my arms across my chest, waiting for Zane to start.
“I think we should call this off,” He began. I opened my mouth to speak but he held up his hand to silence me.
“Let me finish, Sawyer. When I’m done, you can tell me what you think about it. Understood?”
I fell silent once again, it was going to be a long day. I could feel a headache building, I hadn’t had goodnight’s sleep in a while now.
“You said it yourself, we don’t have any more time to waste chasing shadows.” Zane began once again. “Going after Maeve doesn’t guarantee she’ll come back here with us and it would hurt to waste all that time chasing after someone that doesn’t want us anymore.”
“You’re making up scenarios in your head, Zane.” I cut in. “We haven’t even spoken to her yet.”
“We’ve been out of touch for a year now, she harbors a grudge over how we ended things the first time.”
“We made a mistake. It doesn’t seem possible to repair the damage and fix what’s been broken, but we can try. All three of us can change her mind.” I challenged his judgment.
“What if it doesn’t work? What happens then?” Zane replied, his calm demeanor was starting to crack.
“You haven’t given this a trial yet and here you are passing judgment. Why chase a lead and leave it open? It makes zero sense and I’d hate to have wasted my time on this.”
“I’m sorry, Sawyer. But we just have to look elsewhere and come up with something different to what we have already.” Zane said with a note of finality.
I looked between both of them. I knew what they were scared of, rejection. They were scared that she would turn us down the moment we request an audience with her and she would be right to do so but I wasn’t planning on giving up if it meant I would have everything I ever dreamed of.
“So tell me, what’s the genius plan you’ve come up with since you decided to discard the idea of getting Maeve back?” I queried.
“Ethan and I were hoping to discuss that with you, we haven’t been able to come up with something solid yet,” Zane replied, not bothering to look at my face.
“You don’t have a plan yet?” I stared at them wide-eyed, “And you’re seeking to discard the only solid lead we’ve had in months?” I couldn’t believe my ears.
“I don’t want to waste any more time than we already have,” Ethan began. “She’s as good as gone. We should get over it and try something new as Zane suggested.”
“So what happens to our son?” I asked, not willing to let this go so easily. “We never get to see him?”
“Maeve would take care of him, I’m certain,” Ethan replied.
“Father taught us that our word is our bond, does that mean nothing to you?”
“Sawyer,” Zane began. “I know this is difficult but—“
“What’s our word, Zane?” The urgency in my voice forced him to look me dead in the eye. “I want you to say it.”
“A Templar never forgets one of its own.”
I nodded in satisfaction. “We never forget, Zane. We never do and it won’t start under my watch, not when I can do something about it.”
“Why are you hellbent on doing this?” Zane sounded exasperated at this point.
“Why can’t you move on and get over her? Maeve is gone and she isn’t coming back.”
I dipped my hand into my pocket and grabbed my phone, flashing it in front of his face.
“You want to know why I’m scared? Here!” I tossed the phone to him.
“What am I supposed to do with this?” Zane threw me a glance.
“There’s a recording on it, it’s the first thing you’ll see once you double-tap,” I instructed.
“I still don’t get the whole idea behind this,” Zane argued. “What crazy ideas are you trying to create here?”
“Can you just do as I’ve instructed?” I groaned.
“What do you mean, Xavier?” Klaus blurted out, he couldn’t believe his ears.
“Will you do this for me?” Xavier asked, his body racking with coughs as he brought his glass of water to his mouth.
“This is unheard of. It has never happened in our pack’s history before, this is a burden too large for me to carry.” Klaus began, hoping to change Xavier’s mind.
“I know the implications and how great of a burden this is but I cannot leave anything to fate. We make our fate and I get to choose how this ends.” Xavier was adamant, he wasn’t going to take anything other than total acceptance and submission from his Beta, Klaus.
“But, I—Your sons, they’re your heirs. The next in line to your throne. Why would you pass it on to me?”
Xavier squeezed his eyes shut. “The heir to my throne ought to have a mate before my demise to be crowned Alpha but my sons have failed to provide for themselves a Luna to carry on my lineage.”
“They’re still young,” Klaus argued. “Besides, the doctor made mention of your speedy recovery and we’re looking forward to having you back and—“
“Silence!” Xavier thundered. “I will not have you question my decision.”
“Yes, Alpha,” Klaus said in a submissive manner.
“On the eve of my demise and the failure of my sons to provide a mate, you will be crowned the next Alpha. Is this clear?” Xavier said, his voice low and menacing, leaving no room for arguments.
“Yes, Alpha.”
“Good, now that this is settled. I want you to make the necessary preparations for an alternative crowning ceremony if my sons fail. Do this at your discretion and keep this discussion between us.”
The recording ended and Zane stared at me with an incredulous look on his face.
“How did you get this recording?”
“Does it matter?” I asked, “The most important thing is that it exists and it’s real. Father wasn’t bluffing.”
“I can’t believe he would do this to us.” Ethan spluttered, his voice cracking.
“Maeve is our best bet. We have no other choice than to go all in on this.” I emphasized again.
Zane looked at me, he wore a stoic expression on his face and I knew what that meant.
“I have a plan.”
