"Come on, come with me," Veronica urged, looking frantic. Seeing how bad Matthew's injuries were, she was terrified that she might've hurt him even more.
She completely forgot about the excitement in the distance, focusing solely on getting Matthew some medical attention.
Just a while ago, two beastmen got into a fight over the same female, and that chaos spilled over to poor Veronica and Matthew.
Veronica tugged at Matthew's sleeve, but Matthew just casually adjusted his collar with his free hand.
She complained in her mind, 'He's hurt so badly, and he's still acting like nothing happened. He's really something.'
Veronica couldn't stand it anymore. She grabbed Matthew's hand firmly.
Matthew froze for a second. His hand was huge, thick, and rough with calluses, while her hand was soft and delicate.
He was stunned as Veronica tugged him away, guiding him out of the ballroom and into the garden.
"Wait here on the swing. I'll go grab the medicine," Veronica told him as she motioned for him to sit.
Matthew watched her, dressed in a tight-fitting gown, rush off without caring for her appearance. Suddenly, a strange feeling flashed through him.
But the feeling was gone as quickly as it came. Before he could even think about it, it was already gone.
Veronica ran upstairs to get the medicine while thinking, 'I wonder if my psychic power can even help with these physical wounds.'
When she came back with the medicine, Matthew had already put on his usual smile.
'He's clearly up to no good,' Veronica thought, fuming.
She still pulled out the medicine, intending to help treat his wounds, but Matthew refused her.
"Take your hand off me," he said, still smiling. "Or I think you'll regret it."
Veronica's patience snapped, and she rolled her eyes, thinking, 'You think I want to touch you? Drop your ridiculous pride, man.'
"Fine, no medicine then. Want to try my psychic power? It's pretty powerful, you know. Maybe it'll help you heal," Veronica then suggested.
Matthew thought to himself, 'With her S-level psychic power, it could definitely help.' But he didn't say anything.
When Veronica reached out again, Matthew instinctively pushed her hand away.
"What the hell are you doing?" Chase suddenly appeared from the distance, with Leonardo right behind him.
They had been looking for Veronica, and they came just in time to see Matthew pushing Veronica like that.
Chase charged at Matthew, ready to throw a punch, but Matthew caught it easily and twisted his arm behind his back. Matthew snapped, "You sure you want to hit the President of Snakehaven? Think about the consequences."
"What does being President have to do with this? Anyone who hurts my Mistress is my enemy," Chase spat.
Matthew snorted with a mocking smile on his face. He didn't even bother to stand up but easily pinned Chase to the ground. "You overestimated yourself."
"Matthew, stop," Veronica called out, realizing things were getting out of hand. "Chase was just too worried. He thought you were going to hurt me."
"He tried to hit the President. Even if I killed him, he'd deserve it. Who's going to stop me?" Matthew replied with a cold grunt.
"If you kill him, I'll tell everyone you were trying to hurt a female." Veronica's face flushed with anger. "You think the President can just get away with attacking an S-level female?"
Matthew shot her a glance and let go of Chase. "I wasn't planning on doing anything to him. He's not even worth my time."
Veronica was fed up now. She tried to help him, but he wouldn't let her. She shrugged. "Fine, if you don't want the treatment, whatever. Not like I care."
Thinking back to when Veronica reached out to him, Matthew couldn't help but feel like she was the same as all the other females in the Fraser family—just looking for an excuse to strike him. Thus, he instinctively pushed her hand away.
"Females are all the same," Matthew muttered, his voice dripping with disdain. "You're all fake."
"What did you say?" Chase's anger flared up again.
Leonardo stepped in front of Chase and blocked him. "What's wrong with you? Didn't you hear what he said about Mistress?"
"I heard it, but you think you can fight him?" Leonardo said coolly. "Can you clean up the mess after that? Don't cause trouble for Mistress."
Leonardo gave Matthew a small smile. "Yeah, females are all the same, but our Mistress isn't like that. She doesn't even care that I'm a semi-primal beastman.
"Mr. Fraser, it's understandable that someone like you, stuck in your isolated building, doesn't know what's going on outside. Your narrow view of the world is forgivable."
Leonardo's voice was gentle, but each word seemed to dig deep into Matthew's chest.
"Looks like you've never met a female who actually cares about you," Leonardo added, shaking his head. "It's kind of pathetic, really. A man of your status, the President no less, and yet this is where you're at."
'Nonsense,' Matthew spat in his mind.
He kept his face neutral, but his right hand slowly moved to his left wrist. There, hidden under his sleeve, was a burn mark from yesterday—when his family sent him to scout Veronica's psychic power.
He looked perfect on the outside, but beneath his clothes, he was covered in ugly scars. He liked to boast he was the President of Snakehaven, but deep down, he knew he was just a tool of the Fraser family.
Any little thing that went wrong, and all the blame would fall on him.
Matthew mused, 'If it weren't for the damn S-level female, I wouldn't have had to come here in the first place. And now that I've confirmed her psychic power, I have to suck up to her. But it's fine. I'll find a way around it.'
Matthew stood up and smirked carelessly. "Only losers like you need the females's psychic powers to soothe you. For me, it doesn't make a difference whether I have one or not. I don't need to follow their orders."
Despite how much of a mess he was inside, Matthew still refused to show his weakness, especially not in front of those with lower bloodlines.
"That's why I'm President, and you'll always be nothing but a bunch of female hangers-on," he snapped.
Matthew could already feel his wounds tearing open again, but he kept walking away, stubborn as ever.
"Wait, you're bleeding." Veronica's voice cut through just when Matthew was about to collapse.
Right after Matthew walked away, Veronica and her two beasts were about to head in the opposite direction. However, Veronica glanced back at him.
She was just about to comment on how strange Matthew was when she noticed the blood soaking through his white shirt. Even with his long hair covering it, the stain was still visible.
"Matthew!" Veronica hurried over to him with concern written all over her face.
Matthew could no longer keep his balance and collapsed, his head leaning against Veronica's shoulder. His lips were pale, his forehead drenched in cold sweat, and his black hair clung to his head, giving him a vulnerable look.
A voice rang out in Veronica's mind, 'Get a grip, Veronica. It's not the time to think about that.'
She snapped out of it and turned to the two guys behind her. "Hey, get over here and help. What are you standing there for?"
Though neither Chase nor Leonardo liked Matthew, they still moved to help, each supporting one side of him. As they did, they couldn't help but mutter, "Ugh, this guy's heavy."
Veronica looked at Matthew, feeling a pang of sympathy. She gently pressed her forehead against his, feeling the warmth of his skin.
Matthew tried to open his eyes, but all he saw was a blurry image.
He could make out Veronica's face as she cupped his cheeks, and then he felt a surge of power flow into him. His wounds began to heal, and for a brief moment, he saw a halo of light before everything went black.
"This stubborn idiot keeps saying he's fine, but look at him now," Veronica scoffed.
She rubbed her head and still felt a bit dizzy from the exertion.
"Mistress, are you okay?" Leonardo asked, his voice full of concern.
"I'm fine, just need a moment to rest." Veronica waved her hand, brushing off the concern.
She then instructed, "Let Joshua know and get a room ready for Matthew. Get him a doctor. They're enemies, and if this guy dies here, it'll be a real mess."
"Understood, Mistress," replied Leonardo.
Hearing Leonardo's reply, Chase immediately let go of Matthew and suggested, "Mistress, let me stay with you while you rest."
"You should go with Leonardo. Matthew's big and heavy. I'll stay here in the garden and take a short break," said Veronica.
Chase pouted but reluctantly agreed. "Okay, Mistress, just call me if you need anything."
