After breakfast, Veronica headed to the study. She figured it was about time to dig into some info since she still didn't know much about this place.
The study was a key area in Joshua's house. Normally, no one could enter without Joshua's permission. But Joshua had already told her she was free to go anywhere she pleased.
Inside, she found a thick book about the Central District. Flipping through it, she stopped at a section describing a famous aquarium. According to the book, they even had mermaids there.
'Mermaids, huh? I've only ever heard of them in stories, never seen one in real life.' Her thoughts started to wander. 'I wonder if they really have those enchanting voices and hypnotic eyes like the legends say.'
"I really wanna see one," she sighed, tossing the book onto the sofa, already plotting whether Joshua would agree to take her.
At lunch, she casually brought it up to Joshua. Unfortunately, he was buried in work these days and asked her to wait a little while. He promised he'd take her as soon as he had the time.
Veronica wasn't in a rush, so she happily agreed.
Matthew, who overheard the conversation, thought to himself, 'Didn't they want me to get closer to Veronica? This could be my shot.'
After lunch, Veronica was about to take a nap—last night's sleep had been a mess, and she really needed some rest. But barely had she laid down when there came a knock at the door.
"Who is it?" Veronica asked.
Matthew's voice came. "It's me."
Matthew again? That guy's personality has done a complete 180 overnight.' Veronica thought, a little suspicious, but she didn't overthink it. After all, Matthew didn't exactly have a reason to hurt her.
"Come in." Veronica sat up and moved over to the couch.
Matthew stepped inside and headed straight for her. He said with a polite bow, "Ms. Byrne, I heard you're interested in visiting the Central District?"
"Yeah. How'd you know?" Veronica sighed, "But Joshua's swamped with work lately, so he can't take me. I really want to see the mermaids."
Matthew sat beside her, asking, "Well, if that's the case, why not go with someone else?"
Veronica nodded a little, thinking his words did make sense.
But aside from Joshua, she only really knew Chase and Leonardo—and they were just as clueless as she was when it came to exploring new places. Maybe even more clueless than her.
She shook her head again. "Forget it. Chase and Leonardo definitely can't take me. I'll just wait until Joshua's free."
Matthew held out his hand toward her. "Actually, there's one more option if you're willing."
Veronica froze, wondering, 'Wait, he can't mean himself, can he?'
She stared at Matthew, full of questions in her mind. 'Didn't he just say yesterday all females are the same? Now he wants to go sightseeing with me?'
"What's wrong? Don't you wanna go to the Central District with me?" Matthew withdrew his hand, casually leaning back. "Just think of it as my way of thanking you for helping me with my injuries yesterday."
"I didn't mean I don't want to." Veronica hesitated. "It's just..."
Matthew suddenly leaned closer and asked, "Are you scared of me?"
She didn't answer, but her face gave her away. She just didn't quite trust him.
Matthew let out an amused laugh. "What are you worried about? It's not like I'm one of those Interstellar Raiders. I'm not gonna bite you."
It wasn't that Veronica thought he'd hurt her. After all, this world practically worshipped and protected females. That wasn't the issue. It was that she couldn't shake the feeling that Matthew's smiles always contained something shady.
She blinked innocently, clearly bluffing. "Nope, why would I be scared of you?"
Matthew stood up smoothly. "In that case, I'll handle everything. You just need to show up, and I'll take care of the rest. Let's set it five days from now."
Without waiting for her answer, he gave a gentlemanly bow and walked out like the matter was settled.
Veronica stomped her foot, complaining to herself, 'What the hell was that? I never even said yes, okay? What a smug, arrogant, and shady man.'
