Hearing what Matthew said, Joshua didn't even blink. "Mr. Fraser, what makes you think I'd let my mistress go on an outing with you?"
Matthew gave him a tight, fake smile. "Because lately, you've been too busy chasing down those Interstellar Raiders to give her the time of day."
He leaned forward, both hands pressing against Joshua's desk. "You really think the Holland family's security is airtight?
"It was one thing when no one knew about her. But now? Pretty much half the galaxy knows there's an S-level female in your house. You still think this place is safe?"
That was exactly what had been gnawing at Joshua. Lately, the Interstellar Raiders had grown bolder, snatching up more and more females. And as the head of the Guard Corps, he was already under pressure.
If he didn't act fast, the Central District would start pointing fingers at him.
With Veronica around, he didn't dare go full force. The Raiders weren't the kind to hold back, and he couldn't risk her safety. Handing her over to Matthew for a while might actually be the better case now.
Still, Joshua said flatly, "And what makes you think I can trust you to keep her safe?"
He rolled the pen between his fingers and continued, "Mr. Fraser, you don't exactly look like you've got your own situation under control."
Matthew let out a low laugh, full of mockery. "Maybe I don't. But the Fraser family sure as hell does."
His hands curled into fists. "You know why I was sent here. Our families may be at each other's throats, but the Fraser family's stance has never wavered.
"We've got the same enemy. They may not care much about me, but you really think they'd slack off when it comes to an S-level female?"
Joshua knew all that. He just wanted to hear Matthew admit it himself. When it came to Veronica's safety, he couldn't afford to take chances.
Matthew added, "They'd kill for a chance to show off in front of her."
Joshua stayed silent, and Matthew scoffed and muttered, "Fine. I swear it. If they don't do their part, I'll stake my life to keep her safe myself."
Joshua finally nodded, satisfied. "Come on, Mr. Fraser, of course I trust you. You're the president of Snakehaven. Protecting a female should be well within your wheelhouse."
'What a load of crap,' Matthew thought. 'I've known this guy long enough. Over all these years of rivalry, I know exactly what kind of person Joshua Holland is.'
Joshua said, "You may go now, Mr. Fraser. I'll talk to her later."
"Don't bother. I already did," Matthew said coolly, raising his eyebrows like he was daring Joshua to react.
Joshua's brows furrowed. "She agreed?"
He was genuinely puzzled as he thought, 'Veronica's such a nervous wreck. There's no way she'd say yes to someone she barely knows, especially someone like Matthew.'
"Of course she did." Matthew was clearly enjoying Joshua's surprise. That look on his face made the whole thing worth it.
Veronica hadn't actually said yes, but Matthew was confident if he said she did, then she did.
Joshua stiffened, clearly unhappy. He recalled how he scared Veronica half to death the first time they met. He mused with jealousy, 'And she's more comfortable with Matthew? Seriously? Does he really seem more approachable than me?'
He touched his face, suddenly doubtful. Still, his face stayed calm and unreadable. "That's just how she is. She doesn't know how to say no, especially to the thick-skinned types."
Joshua's tone turned colder. "Otherwise, she wouldn't have kept those two low-blooded rejects around, would she?
"As her officially acknowledged bondmate, it's only right I ask on her behalf. Since she's said yes, I'll handle the arrangements. Mr. Fraser, all I ask of you is to make sure she stays safe."
He glanced up. "After all, you don't really know her."
Matthew let out a scornful smile, but he said nothing. He turned on his heel and walked out.
He retorted in his mind, 'Don't know her? Please. After this trip, I'll know everything I need to. I can't wait to see the look on Joshua's face when I steal her right out from under his nose. That'll be priceless.
'I can still feel her from last night, every inch of it.'
