After nightfall, Joshua made a special trip to see Veronica. He found her sitting on the edge of the bed, legs gently swinging, brows furrowed, clearly in a mood. He knew her too well by now—when she looked like that, something was definitely eating at her.
Instead of asking right away, he sat quietly on the sofa not far from her, watching her with calm, steady eyes, giving her space to speak when she was ready.
After a moment, she finally said, her voice laced with frustration, "Matthew's so overbearing. I never said I wanted to go with him."
Joshua let out a breath, already half expecting it. Matthew had always been that kind of guy—too decisive, never stopping to think if someone else might feel differently.
He sighed and said, "Mistress, I'll sort everything out as soon as I can. For now, it's safest if you lay low in the Central District."
Veronica pouted, clearly not thrilled, but she didn't argue. She knew Joshua was neck-deep in problems with the Interstellar Raiders. She wasn't the type to make things harder on him just because she was unhappy. With a small nod, she accepted the arrangement.
Seeing her expression, Joshua felt his chest loosen a bit. He knew Veronica could come off a little temperamental, but at heart, she was kind and surprisingly thoughtful.
"Is it because you don't want to go with Matthew?" he asked, tilting his head.
Veronica shook her head but didn't reply. Joshua asked gently, "Then what is it? You don't look too happy."
Veronica kept silent for a while and then said softly, "It's not that I don't want to go with him. It's just we're not even that close, and he just decided everything for me."
Joshua felt a sigh rise in his chest, thinking, 'Exactly what I thought. Matthew doesn't get her at all. She may not know how to say no out loud, but that doesn't mean she's easygoing. She's got plenty of pride under the surface.'
Joshua wished he could be around more, to offer her the kind of support and warmth she needed.
He reached out and gently patted her shoulder. "Don't worry. I'll be right here, whatever happens."
His voice, low and warm, settled something inside Veronica.
She knew that with Joshua by her side, no matter what difficulties she faced, she would never be alone. She looked up and met Joshua's eyes, filled with love and care, and her heart was full of gratitude and trust.
"I'd rather go with you. Or maybe with Leonardo and Chase," Veronica murmured.
Joshua felt like the sun had just come out behind storm clouds. He thought, 'I knew it. There's no way she'd jump at the chance to travel with Matthew. She still depends on me more than anyone else.'
As for the mention of Chase and Leonardo, he pretended not to hear that part.
Thinking of what Veronica said she wanted to go with her, Joshua could hardly hold back his smile.
Trying to keep a straight face, he cleared his throat. "I wish I could. But things are a mess right now. If I wasn't so swamped, I never would've agreed to let you go with him."
Veronica nodded with an understandable look. "It's okay. Just focus on your work. Matthew's still here for a few days, right? I'll try to get used to him a little. Worst case, I'll just do my own thing during the trip and ignore him."
Joshua walked over and gave her a light pat on the head. "You're brave. Already brave enough to travel on your own."
