"Let's go. Time to head out." Matthew's voice snapped Veronica out of her thoughts.
She gave a quick nod and followed him onto the ship.
As the vessel lifted off, she stared out the window, watching the view below shrink little by little until it finally disappeared from sight.
There was a slight tug of reluctance in her chest, but even more than that, she felt a growing excitement about the journey ahead.
She figured maybe this trip would help her get a better feel for this place and even give her a chance to breathe, to take her mind off all the crap she'd been dealing with lately.
Settled into the luxury cabin, Veronica felt her tension start to ease. Matthew, despite his foxlike smile and seemingly two-faced charm, had actually been treating her with a fair amount of care.
As they chatted casually, Veronica learned that Matthew came from a long line of military officers and had a deep understanding of both warfare and politics.
She couldn't help but see him in a new light, thinking that this trip might turn out to be more rewarding than she'd expected.
The ship was insanely fast. Before she could even finish soaking in the thrill of just being on it, they were already docking at the Central District.
Veronica glanced around this whole new place with wide-eyed curiosity. Everything was so unfamiliar, so fresh.
It was obvious this place was way more developed and advanced than Snakehaven. From the buildings to the infrastructure, everything screamed next-level tech.
She couldn't help but marvel—there was still so much in the world she had yet to see.
She stepped outside and was instantly hit by the full spectacle. The first thing she saw was a line of massive skyscrapers towering straight into the sky, each one with its own unique design, glowing and gleaming like jewels.
In between those giants were all kinds of transportation zipping around—some flying overhead, some speeding along the ground. It all looked like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, a living, breathing masterpiece of technology.
But it wasn't just the buildings or the traffic that caught her eye. The people here were on a whole other level too. Everyone was dressed sharp, moving with elegance, confidence and vitality practically radiating off them.
What amazed her even more was that the people here all seemed to possess advanced technological skills she had never encountered before. Some casually maneuvered hovering tools right on the street, while others handled all kinds of tasks with ease using sleek, intelligent devices.
Veronica couldn't help but be awed by how vast the world truly was—what she knew was only the tip of the iceberg.
She made up her mind to explore this place properly and see for herself how many technological marvels this bustling Central District was still hiding.
Matthew stood beside her, watching her curious expression with amusement. "What's wrong? Joshua never showed you the outside world before?"
"I just didn't want to go," Veronica shot back. She wasn't in the mood to hear Matthew talk trash about Joshua.
Just as Veronica was about to step out of the ship, the clear sky above them was suddenly swallowed by an enormous unidentified object.
The thing was pitch-black, as if it could devour all light, and its looming presence sent a chill through everyone.
Its sudden appearance shattered the calm of the spaceport, and a wave of pressure swept over everyone present.
People inside the ship and soldiers outside instantly went on alert, all eyes turning to the object with unease and confusion tightening in their chests.
Then someone shouted, "Interstellar Raiders!" The voice cracked like thunder through the cabin, making everyone's pulse spike.
"Quick. Protect the female and Mr. Fraser," another voice barked.
Tension instantly snapped through the air. Everyone scrambled for weapons, readying themselves for whatever danger was about to happen.
Veronica immediately tensed too. She knew she couldn't afford to become a target for the Interstellar Raiders.
But then, a wave of dizziness hit her like a freight train. Before she could even react, she felt her body losing control and being dragged toward that mysterious object.
A jolt shot through Veronica's chest as she instantly realized she had walked right into the Interstellar Raiders' trap. She tried to fight back, but her strength was pitifully insignificant in the face of this strange force.
Matthew noticed something was wrong with her right away. He immediately lunged forward, trying to pull her back, but an invisible force locked him in place. He couldn't move.
