Veronica thought to herself, 'If I knew why I was here, I wouldn't still be stuck in this mess. I can't just tell him the whole story.
'Who knows what kind of treatment a non-resident like me would get in this place? Better play dumb for now and figure out what's going on before I tell him anything.'
"I don't remember," she said cautiously. "Mr. Holland, can you tell me something about the Federation? I can't remember anything except my name."
Joshua studied her closely with a slight smile. "Of course, I'll fulfill all your requests. But it might be hard for me to explain everything in one go. Maybe once you're feeling better, I can take you to the hub in Snakehaven. Would that work for you?"
Veronica didn't even hesitate but said, "I feel good now. Can we go right away?"
Joshua furrowed his brow slightly, and that was when Veronica realized she might've pushed too hard. She corrected herself. "Sorry, I didn't mean to pressure you. If you're busy, I—"
Joshua smiled, his tone still smooth. "No, it's my honor to serve you. But if you don't mind, I'd like to make a few preparations first."
Veronica just nodded, still processing everything.
Joshua rolled up his sleeves, revealing purple markings on his lean wrist. He raised a hand, and a holo-screen appeared out of nowhere.
While Veronica was still in shock, Joshua spoke up, his voice cool and professional, "Squad three and five, report to the Interstellar Federation Medical Center's gate.
"Prepare the highest-level defensive gear. Secure a three-mile radius around the hub. If any suspicious individuals refuse to cooperate, kill them immediately."
Veronica watched as his golden eyes glinted in the light, her heart skipping a beat. She thought, 'I thought he was just a cool guy with a bit of a dark vibe. But he casually talked about killing someone like this? That's chilling.'
Her mind raced with fear. 'Wait, if they kill people just for not cooperating, what happens if I don't go along with them? Will they kill me too?'
Her face went pale, her body shaking, and she couldn't look away from Joshua.
After Joshua finished giving his orders, he turned off his holo-interface and smiled at Veronica. He was about to tell her they could leave, but then, he noticed her shaking.
He frowned, stepping closer and reaching for her forehead. "What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell? I'll get a doctor for you right now."
"No, no, I'm fine," Veronica replied, pulling away from his touch as her teeth chattered. "I just... I suddenly don't want to go. I think I need some rest."
Joshua raised his eyebrows, noticing the fear in her eyes. He immediately realized something and thought, 'Females are naturally more timid and delicate.
"A beautiful female like her must've been well protected in the Central District. Snakehaven must be terrifying for her. She's not used to this kind of chaos.'
He immediately knelt by her bedside, looking up at her with a serious expression. "I'm sorry I scared you. But this is the Federation's protocol. I have to take these precautions to ensure your safety. Snakehaven is right next to the wastelands, and it's a dangerous, chaotic place."
Joshua's voice softened, almost reverently as he spoke, "Honored female, I would never hurt you, and I won't let anyone else hurt you."
The sincerity in his words and the way he knelt before her with such earnestness made Veronica feel like she wanted to trust him, even though everything about the situation was still so overwhelming.
As Veronica thought about everything, she realized that since she woke up, these people were constantly sending the message that females were precious. They seemed pretty genuine. She figured Joshua probably wasn't lying to her.
After a moment of hesitation, she nodded. "I trust you. So, can we go to the hub now?"
Joshua seemed to relax a bit. He stood up and helped her to her feet, his cool fingers brushing against her hand in a way that sent a strange, tingling sensation up her arm. "Of course. My team and I are at your service."
Veronica followed Joshua out of the hospital, and her mind was still a bit foggy.
The city outside was unlike anything she'd seen. The towering city walls seemed to touch the clouds, and the buildings looked massive and heavy, as if they had been built to withstand something terrible.
In the distance, she saw a tall tower made of gears slowly turning. The sky was a bright blue, but the black sun was nowhere in sight.
A group of beastmen in gray uniforms stood outside, lined up neatly. When they saw Veronica, they all knelt in unison, but their eyes lingered on her, full of reverence and something else—almost like worship.
Joshua helped her into a strange vehicle. All the way along, the streets were eerily empty.
The vehicle took them toward the tower, and once inside, countless holo-screens appeared before her.
Veronica was overwhelmed, her mind trying to catch up. It wasn't until Joshua started explaining everything that she started to understand her situation.
She wasn't on Earth anymore, not even in the Milky Way. She was in a galaxy called R-12. The natives of this galaxy were beastmen, who owned more advanced technology than human beings on Earth.
However, those beastmen here suffered a great catastrophe a thousand years ago.
A mysterious radiation caused most of the planets to undergo mutations, making the beastmen regress into primal, beast-like states—primal regression. Even the plants had been affected, their branches growing but never sprouting leaves.
To survive, the beastmen created the Federation, building the Safe Zone to protect themselves from the radiation. But to leave the Safe Zone, they needed protection.
Then, scientists discovered something else: females could occasionally develop psychic powers, which had the ability to suppress the primal regression and stop the beastmen from turning into wild beasts.
That was why females were considered treasures of the Federation.
However, the birthrate of females had dropped drastically over the centuries, now only three in ten thousand births, and the stronger the psychic power, the rarer they were.
Veronica thought with a nod, 'No wonder these people treat me like royalty. That explains it.'
Veronica's emotions were complicated when she thought of her own situation. She had been raised in a family where men were always prioritized, and she fought tooth and nail to get into university just to escape that suffocating home.
Now, in this strange new world, she still wasn't sure how to fit in.
Joshua's voice suddenly broke her out of her thoughts. "Ms. Byrne."
She turned to face him and asked, "Yeah?"
Joshua looked at her intently and replied, "The Federation has no records of you. I scanned your iris, but there's no match."
He leaned in closer, his voice dropping low. "So, do you really lose your memories, or do you not belong here, precious little female?"
