Seeing how anxious he was, Joshua felt a twinge of helplessness, but he still answered patiently, "She just passed out from overusing her psychic power. She's okay. Can I take her in for a check-up first?"
Only then did Matthew begin to relax. He thought, 'Thank goodness it's just psychic power exhaustion. If something had really happened to her, I'd never forgive myself.'
He couldn't stop thinking about the moment Veronica was taken—how she'd let herself be captured by the Interstellar Raiders just to keep him from getting hurt.
Matthew's fists clenched. He thought, 'Maybe she really is different from other females. But this isn't the time to dwell on that.'
Veronica was taken into the medical ward. It wasn't the first time she'd fainted from pushing her psychic power too far.
Seeing Veronica lying there, her face pale and her body hooked up to various wires, Joshua couldn't help but think back to the first time he met her.
She had been quietly staying off to the side, but at his unintentionally harsh words, she'd suddenly trembled like a startled bird.
Back then, she had been just a newly arrived female, her eyes filled with curiosity and hope for this world. But that one sudden scare had thrown her completely off balance.
She'd bit down hard on her lower lip, trying to keep her emotions in check, but her body had still shaken, giving away the vulnerability she couldn't hide.
Looking at her soft, delicate face, something fierce had surged inside Joshua—a deep, almost primal urge to protect her.
He had known then that despite how fragile she looked, this female had an unshakable core.
And in that moment, he'd made a silent vow—no matter what it cost him, he would make her his Mistress, protect her, take care of her, and never let her get hurt.
Even though they hadn't officially bonded yet, everyone in their group already knew—she was his Mistress.
The bond and understanding between them had long since gone beyond simple words or gestures—it had become a kind of unspoken connection, something that felt like telepathy.
"Mistress, please wake up," he whispered, his voice low, filled with worry and hope.
Matthew, Chase, Leonardo, and the others stood quietly around Veronica's hospital bed. All their eyes were fixed on her pale, peaceful face, waiting for her to wake up.
Suddenly, Veronica let out a soft groan, the kind that hinted she was slowly coming to. Everyone's attention snapped to her, their eyes filled with tension and hope.
Veronica's thick lashes fluttered, and her bright eyes slowly opened, glinting with a faint, quiet light. She was awake. Her awakening brought a flicker of life and hope back into the still room.
Chase was the first to rush over, throwing himself onto her legs, sobbing, "Mistress, you're finally awake."
He cried with raw emotion. He had truly been scared—scared that he would never see his Mistress again.
Veronica looked at him, clearly at a loss, then finally managed to say something to comfort him, "Come on. I'm fine, right?"
Chase wiped his tear-streaked face, but kept crying, "If anything ever really happened to you, I wouldn't wanna live either."
Leonardo couldn't hold it in anymore. "Alright, that's enough. Don't go around saying stuff like that. Mistress just woke up—she still needs rest. Can't you calm down for once?"
Leonardo was usually the gentle one, but this dumb tiger got on his nerves more often than he cared to admit.
Chase glanced at Veronica again. Seeing how pale she still looked, he mumbled an aggrieved "Okay".
The moment Veronica woke up, Joshua had already called for a doctor.
Right then, the doctor appeared at the door. At the sight of him, the others finally stepped aside.
Matthew, ever since the moment Veronica opened her eyes, hadn't said a word. His mind was a tangled mess.
Part of him still believed females were nothing but trouble, yet he couldn't shake the image of her that day—when she saved him.
He stared at her with a conflicted expression. 'If only she wasn't this good,' he thought, 'maybe I wouldn't feel so damn torn up over it.'
