They understood that if they could make full use of Veronica's unique ability, the future of the Fraser family could undergo a dramatic transformation. It wasn't just about the promise of a brighter future—it was also a pursuit of individual worth and family pride.
At the head of the table, the female's lips curved into a confident, unshakable smile.
Her name was Julia Fraser, the current matriarch of the Fraser family. "Our family did help save her life, after all. Inviting her over as a guest isn't asking too much, is it?" she asked.
The others exchanged knowing smiles. One of them spoke, "Matriarch, what are you saying? She hasn't even repaid us for saving her life. Helping enhance the psychic power of a few females isn't exactly asking a lot."
The female in combat gear had a colder edge between her brows. "If she won't respond to kindness, we'll push harder."
Julia raised her hand slightly. "Go call Matthew to my study. Wasn't he supposed to be working on getting close to that female? It's time he did something useful."
When Julia arrived, Matthew was standing with his back to the door, facing the desk. He didn't notice she had entered.
He was silently trying to guess what task she'd send him on this time. Rolling up his sleeve, he glanced at the scar on his arm.
The wound had long healed, but the scar refused to fade. One hadn't even disappeared before another took its place, over and over again, with no end in sight.
Julia asked, "What's wrong? Holding a grudge now?"
Matthew immediately dropped to one knee. "No, Matriarch."
Julia took a seat at the desk. "Relax. I'm not in the mood to hit you today. I told you before to win Veronica over. How are things going with her now?"
Upon hearing it was another matter related to Veronica, Matthew clenched his fist slightly. "Matriarch, Ms. Byrne and I have already formed a strong friendship." The words rolled off his tongue without hesitation.
Julia smiled with satisfaction, "Good, Matthew. I knew I wasn't wrong about you. Then bring Veronica over as our guest tomorrow."
Matthew frowned. Something about it felt off. But he thought, 'Veronica's an S-level female, respected wherever she goes. She's a treasure of the entire Federation. Even if they're up to something, what could they possibly do to her?'
After a brief moment of thought, he agreed. It wasn't exactly a difficult task, and honestly, being assigned something this simple all of a sudden felt a little unfamiliar.
The next morning, Matthew went to knock on Veronica's door.
Inside, Veronica was still sound asleep. The knocking stirred her, and she rubbed her eyes drowsily before asking, "Who is it?" Her voice still carried traces of sleep, and she was clearly not yet fully awake.
She was still recovering from the day before, when she had pushed herself hard to help Emilia upgrade her psychic power. The effort had drained her, both physically and mentally.
Matthew said, "Honored female, it's me, Matthew."
Veronica wondered, 'Matthew?' Hearing his voice snapped her out of her daze.
She was a little surprised. Since returning to the Central District, Matthew hadn't come to see her even once. She had assumed they'd gone their separate ways.
But now that Matthew had suddenly shown up at her door, she couldn't help feeling curious about what exactly he was here for.
Veronica quickly got out of bed, straightened her clothes and smoothed her hair, then walked to the door and opened it, only to see Matthew standing at the entrance, a faint smile on his face. He seemed to be in a rather good mood.
"Matthew, what brings you here?" Veronica asked curiously.
Matthew gave a slight bow, gentlemanly and composed. "I came to thank you."
Veronica looked puzzled. 'Thank me? For what? I didn't really do anything,' she pondered.
Seeing the confusion on her face, Matthew nearly let out a laugh, amused by how completely she had forgotten about it. Clearly, Veronica hadn't taken that incident to heart at all.
Straightening up, Matthew smiled and said, "When the Interstellar Raiders attacked a while ago, it was thanks to you that I made it out."
Veronica quickly waved her hands. "No, you were the one saving me. And in the end, it was the Fraser family's females who rescued me anyway."
