As he neared the room and caught the faint sounds from inside, his anxiety only grew. He took a deep breath, braced himself, and shoved the door open. What he saw froze him in place. Veronica was lying on the floor, completely still.
A rush of guilt and fury surged through him. If he hadn't brought her here, none of this would have happened to her.
"Veronica." He rushed to her side and knelt down, carefully pulling her into his arms. Examining her closely, he found her unresponsive. Panic rose in his throat.
He looked up at Julia, his eyes blazing with rage and accusation. "What did you do to her?"
Julia met his glare with a cold smile. "Matthew, don't forget your place. This isn't somewhere you get to throw tantrums."
Matthew hadn't expected they'd actually dare lay a hand on Veronica. Holding her tightly, he moved to get her out of this dangerous place as quickly as possible.
But Julia blocked his path. "What do you think you're doing, Matthew?"
"I'm taking her with me," he said firmly.
Julia let out a mocking laugh. "And what right do you think you have? The fact that you're the president of Snakehaven? Don't forget who gave you that title. If I gave it to you, I can take it away just as easily."
Matthew ignored her taunts and kept moving forward with Veronica in his arms. But then, Julia suddenly struck him hard across the back with her palm.
He let out a pained grunt, but he didn't let go. He held onto Veronica tightly and kept walking forward with staggering steps.
Julia barked out an order. "Stop him. No one walks out of this room unless I say so."
Matthew carefully laid Veronica down, his gaze burning with determination and resolve. He was going to get her out of here no matter what. This was on him—this time, he wasn't walking away.
But against a group of highly trained females, breaking through alone was next to impossible. He might've been one of the strongest among the males, but up against their coordinated assault, he could barely hold his ground.
Matthew fought with everything he had, but every strike was swiftly countered, and he kept taking hits from all sides. He kept searching for an opening, but every attempt was shut down with ruthless precision.
Finally, after another fierce exchange, Matthew's knees buckled, and he dropped to the ground.
He looked up at Veronica lying ahead, his eyes filled with frustration and rage. 'Is this really how it ends for me? Right here?' he wondered, unwilling to accept defeat, unwilling to give up.
Just then, a gunshot shattered the silence outside.
Matthew's heart skipped. He snapped his head toward the door—and there was Joshua, walking in slowly with a gun in his hand.
His gaze swept the room, cold and sharp. "Let's see who's got the guts to stop me from taking them out of here. Ms. Fraser, what a pleasant surprise."
Joshua's tone was icy and resolute, and the chill it brought cut through the room like a blade.
Julia's heart lurched. 'Crap. How did Joshua find out? This isn't going to end well.'
She didn't even hesitate before coming up with an excuse. "Mr. Holland, we're handling Matthew—he's a threat. He hurt Veronica. Even if he's one of ours, the Fraser family will never let that slide."
Matthew almost snapped. After everything he'd done for the Fraser family, they were really throwing him under the bus.
But Joshua wasn't an idiot. He knew exactly what was going on—they were trying to discard Matthew to bury the truth.
Veronica didn't have any visible injuries, and Joshua figured it had to be psychic power exhaustion again. Since no outsiders knew she could boost psychic power, the Fraser family blaming it on Matthew actually made a twisted kind of sense.
Julia just pinned everything on Matthew, claiming that he, as a male, had sought comfort from Veronica, a female, and ended up exhausting her psychic power, leaving her sick.
No one on the outside would question it—especially when the Frasers still had leverage on Veronica.
