Julia saw the cold, unreadable look on Joshua's face and felt a flicker of unease tighten in her chest. She had no choice but to speak up again, "Just now, during Veronica's treatment, we realized this S-level female really is something else. She can even..."
She didn't finish her sentence. There was no need—Joshua wasn't stupid.
He knew exactly what Julia was after. By handing Matthew over, the Fraser family figured they'd given him an acceptable explanation. If he let it go here, they wouldn't breathe a word about Veronica's ability to enhance females' psychic power.
But that ability was too dangerous to expose. The moment it leaked, every major power would come clawing for it. And Joshua knew he didn't have the strength yet to keep her safe from all of them.
If word got out, all it would bring her was chaos. So for now, he had no choice but to suck it up and let the Fraser family walk away clean.
Joshua's golden slit pupils flickered, and he let out a cold laugh. "Ms. Fraser, I'll let it go for today. But if anything like this happens to Veronica again, we'll settle every score, old and new."
He scooped Veronica into his arms and turned his back to Julia. "Since you claim this was all Matthew's fault, I'm taking him with me too."
Matthew, clutching his chest, staggered along behind them as Joshua walked out of Fraser Estate.
Joshua didn't waste a second. Holding Veronica close, he rushed her to the hospital, anxiety and guilt twisting in his gut. The whole way there, one thought circled in his mind—he had to get stronger. It was the only way to truly protect her.
After handing Veronica over to the doctors, Joshua immediately summoned Matthew for answers.
Matthew could only piece together a rough idea of what had happened—everything else would have to wait until Veronica woke up.
Joshua pinched the bridge of his nose, then told Matthew to get his injuries looked at while he went to check on Veronica in her hospital room.
The moment he walked into the room, Joshua's gaze fell on Veronica, lying on the bed with a face so pale and worn it made his chest tighten.
He clenched his fists so hard it felt like he could crush his guilt and fury in his grip.
He knew all too well that he had once again failed to protect Veronica and let her get hurt. Despite the countless times he had sworn to keep her safe from harm, this time, he had broken that promise again.
Joshua took a deep breath, trying to steady his emotions. He knew that right now, the most important thing was taking care of Veronica and helping her recover as quickly as possible.
Fortunately, the doctor told him there was no serious issue—she had simply collapsed from overusing her psychic power.
Joshua had dealt with this before, so he knew exactly how to take care of her. He stayed by her bedside without leaving for a second, gripping her hand tightly as he thought, 'How many times have I let this happen? Once? Twice?'
He murmured, "Mistress."
Veronica slowly opened her eyes, taking in the familiar sight in front of her, and couldn't help but feel a little helpless.
She'd honestly lost count of how many times she'd woken up in a hospital room. The layout might change, but the one constant was this man—always there, quietly watching over her.
"Joshua," she said softly.
Matthew had been waiting silently outside the room. He knew he'd messed up, and didn't dare stay by Veronica's bedside. But the moment he heard Veronica's voice, he rushed in.
Veronica blinked in surprise. She vaguely remembered seeing Matthew just before she passed out. Then something clicked. "Where are Chase and Leonardo?" she asked.
Joshua was puzzled too, thinking, 'Those two cling to her like shadows. They're always around. How come they've both vanished the last couple days?'
Veronica's voice grew anxious. "The Fraser family. It was the Fraser family. They used Chase and Leonardo to threaten me. They promised if I helped them enhance their psychic power, they'd let them go. Where are they now?"
Joshua hadn't expected that at all. "Mistress, please don't worry. What matters most is your recovery. I'll send someone to find them right away."
