Chase asked, "Then why'd you bond with Joshua and Leonardo but not me?"
Veronica was momentarily at a loss for words.
Her silence hit Chase like a punch to the gut. "Mistress, you really do hate me. I won't bother you anymore."
He was bawling his eyes out, crying like there was no tomorrow, and Veronica felt genuinely sorry.
She gently stroked his head and said, "I've never thought that, Chase. Look, with Joshua, it was because he'd been without a female's psychic power to soothe him for too long, so I bonded with him, right?"
"What about Leonardo then?" Chase pressed.
Veronica explained, "Leonardo already gets mocked a lot because he's a semi-beastman. He wants to become stronger, to earn military merit. I just gave him a bit of security. Without my psychic power, he could easily slip into semi-primal regression."
Chase nodded, starting to make sense of it. "Then if I join the military and want to earn some merit too, would you bond with me then, Mistress?"
Veronica looked at his teary, sniffling face and couldn't help but let out a helpless sigh. She thought, 'He's still as clingy as ever. He's a big tiger on the outside, a little kitten on the inside, always rolling over and showing me his belly.
'I even gave this dumb tiger the first kiss of my twenty-something years of single life.'
After Veronica had mostly recovered, they finally returned to Snakehaven.
Back in the place she hadn't seen in a while, Veronica felt a little excited. After all, this was where she'd spent the most time since arriving here.
The Holland family's castle looked almost exactly the same as when she'd left. Even the flowers in the courtyard felt unchanged to her.
She sat on the swing in the back garden, swaying gently as she thought about what lay ahead.
She knew her strengths well. Though she had no grand ambitions or big goals, she was fully aware of both her advantages and her limits.
In a world filled with competition and challenge, Veronica understood that if she wanted to stand her ground and protect the people and things she cared about, she had to keep growing—she had to become stronger.
The experience of being threatened by the Fraser family with Chase and Leonardo had lodged itself deep in her mind and never truly left her.
Veronica had realized then that only by becoming powerful enough could she handle whatever came her way, without being manipulated or threatened by others.
What she wanted was the freedom to live on her own terms, to make her own choices, not be controlled by anyone else.
She had never wished harm on others, but she knew just how complicated people could be, and she couldn't afford to let her guard down.
She understood that some people might stop at nothing for their own gain, even if it meant hurting others. That was why she had to stay alert at all times and make sure she didn't get hurt.
What weighed on her mind even more was finding a way back to Earth. She knew that no matter how imperfect life had been there, Earth was still her home, and that attachment was something she could never fully let go of.
Also, she had fought her way out of the grip of her family and become someone independent, someone free.
Even though she had made many friends here, deep down, she still longed to return to that place—familiar yet distant—and start over. Here, she had never truly felt a sense of belonging.
"What are you thinking about?" Joshua asked softly, his voice low and gentle, brushing past her ear like a summer breeze.
