Chase was clearly drunk. He swayed unsteadily, clinging to Leonardo's shoulders with both hands, mumbling, "Leonardo, you were pretty awesome this time, I'll give you that, but I still haven't forgiven you for bonding with Mistress behind my back."
His voice was full of grievance and frustration, like the whole thing had left a scar he still hadn't gotten over.
Leonardo listened to Chase and felt a wave of helplessness. He gave an awkward smile, trying to lighten the mood, but deep down, he firmly believed that bonding with Veronica was a choice he would never regret.
Even if he had to make the same decision again, he would still do it without hesitation. He understood how Chase felt, but he also knew that his choice wasn't wrong.
Chase seemed to grow more emotional the more he spoke. His eyes began to redden, and his voice started to tremble. He cried quietly, like he was letting out everything he'd been holding in.
"Just you wait. Once I get into the army, I'm gonna be even better than you," Chase said through sobs. There was determination and defiance in his voice, as if he could already see himself rising through the ranks in the army.
Leonardo nodded silently as Chase tipped sideways and collapsed onto the floor.
When all the noise and laughter had finally died down, leaving only the mess on the table and everyone slumped over in various drunken states, silence took over the room.
Only then did Leonardo quietly get up and walk with steady steps to where Veronica was. He lowered himself and dropped to one knee, a gesture that was both respectful and full of affection.
He reached out and gently took her hand, his eyes shimmering with gratitude.
He said softly, "Mistress, I really don't know how to thank you. From the first time we met, you've been helping me without ever looking down on me for being a semi-beastman. This time, you went to such lengths for me and sacrificed so much."
Hearing those words, Veronica couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with emotion.
She thought back to the first time she met Leonardo. Back then, she had just stepped into this unfamiliar manor, and Leonardo had been a semi-beastman with fear written all over his face. Now, he had become strong and brave.
She gave a slight shake of her head and smiled at him, "No, Leonardo. You earned all of this yourself. I only did what I was supposed to do. You're the one who got here through your own effort and courage."
Leonardo didn't say anything. He simply leaned against Veronica's legs like a spoiled cat. He buried his face in her palm, and Veronica felt something wet. She knew it was Leonardo's tears.
The night passed quietly, cloaking the sky in silence and mystery. The stars shimmered faintly above, as if whispering secrets no one could hear. Moonlight spilled across the land, casting everything in a soft silver glow.
As time moved on, the darkness slowly faded, and the first light of dawn quietly bloomed on the horizon.
Leonardo was stirred from sleep by a cool breeze at dawn. He rubbed his sleepy eyes, quickly washed up, packed his things, and got ready to return to the army.
However, just as he reached the door, Leonardo was surprised to find Chase already packed and waiting for him. There was a smile on his face, and his eyes held a mix of determination and anticipation.
Leonardo thought back to their conversation last night. He had assumed Chase's drunken words were nothing but nonsense, but it turned out he'd meant every bit of it.
"Leonardo, time to head out," Chase said, breaking the early morning silence.
Noticing the slightly dazed look on Leonardo's face, Chase couldn't help but find it a little funny. He strode over and gave Leonardo a light punch on the shoulder.
"What, afraid I'll end up taking all the military credits or something?" Chase teased.
