Veronica sat alone in the study, fully focused as she flipped through all kinds of materials.
Normally, Chase and Leonardo would be nearby, but now that both of them had gone to the army, she was the only one left in the study, and she found it a little hard to get used to.
Without Chase chattering beside her, the room felt especially quiet. Without all the laughter and the constant arguing, Veronica felt like she had stepped into a completely different world.
She could hear the wind clearly outside the window and could feel the stillness and solitude lingering in the air. But the quiet also left her a little bored. She let out a soft sigh.
Just then, her holo-interface lit up with a new notification. She looked closely. It was a recruitment notice from Illusia.
Illusia had acquired seeds from the Ancient Earth, dating back hundreds of millions of years, and was now openly recruiting capable individuals to help bring them back to life.
Seeing the message, Veronica perked up immediately. Seeds from Earth were something she knew like the back of her hand.
She decided to sign up for the project—not only because she missed anything related to Earth, but also because it could help with the food problem.
Radiation had made it impossible for trees to grow leaves, and other plants were affected to varying degrees. Many beastmen were still going hungry.
She thought, 'But how am I supposed to get in touch with Illusia?'
The first people she thought of were the Holland family. They were on good terms with her and had the resources to help—though it would mean troubling Joshua again. She planned to talk to him about it once he returned.
After dinner, Veronica stayed in the living room waiting for Joshua to come back. He'd been at the military base these past few days, but she figured he'd probably be back today. What she didn't expect was for Matthew to show up instead.
She still remembered how Matthew had gone head-to-head with the Fraser family for her last time. Later, he and Joshua had reached some kind of agreement.
She had no idea what he'd said to the Fraser family's females, but somehow, he managed to keep his position as the president of Snakehaven.
Veronica stood up. "Matthew, what are you doing here? Is something going on?"
Matthew smiled, "What, I need a reason to come by?"
Veronica rubbed her forehead. "That's not what I meant. Didn't you stay behind at Fraser Estate to settle things? All done now?"
Matthew nodded. "Yeah, that's wrapped up. And now, the Fraser family's sent me over again to stay on your good side."
Veronica hesitated. "Matthew, you..."
Matthew suddenly leaned in. "What is it? Wanna ask about my injuries? Or what kind of new assignment the Fraser family gave me?"
He lowered his eyes. "If you're worried about me, you can ask. If it's anything else, don't bother—I might get my feelings hurt."
He said he'd be hurt, but there was still a smile on his face. "All you need to know is that I'd never hurt you. What happened last time was a fluke. It won't happen again."
Veronica answered without hesitation, "Of course I trust you."
Her reply was so direct that Matthew couldn't say anything else. Seeing how distracted she looked, he asked with concern, "What's wrong? You seem a little out of it."
Veronica let out a sigh and shook her head with a trace of frustration. "I'm waiting for Joshua to come back so I can discuss something with him."
Hearing that, Matthew raised an eyebrow slightly, seemingly intrigued. "Oh? What is it? Maybe I can help."
Veronica glanced at him, hesitating a little. "Do you know about Illusia's seeds?"
Hearing that, Matthew gave a helpless look. "That's it?"
Veronica nodded, confused. "Yeah, that's it." She thought, 'Wait, is this supposed to be easy?'
Matthew gave her a light tap on the head. "Dummy. Did you forget why the Fraser family sent me here?"
There was a trace of quiet fondness in his voice, like he didn't even realize how much he cared for her.
