Matthew and Joshua walked one after the other, like they were sworn enemies.
Veronica had just stepped out of the research institute when she saw Matthew in the distance, with Joshua trailing behind him.
"Matthew?" she called out, a little confused. She hadn't expected to run into him here.
The sound of Matthew and Joshua's footsteps echoed down the empty hallway. As they neared, Joshua suddenly picked up his pace and came up beside Veronica.
Matthew slowly approached Veronica, and his eyes shifted between her and Joshua. He gave a faint smile and asked, his tone tinged with sarcasm, "What is it? Am I interrupting something between you two, Ms. Byrne?"
Veronica was a little embarrassed and unsure how to respond. Joshua simply stared at Matthew, expressionless.
Matthew's gaze lingered on Veronica for a moment before moving to Joshua.
He'd heard about Veronica's psychic power going out of control because of Joshua, but he didn't show any reaction. He would never let himself look weak in front of Joshua. He took a deep breath, trying his best to appear calm and composed.
Joshua sneered, "So you knew you were interrupting, and you still showed up?"
"Joshua!" Veronica quickly shot him a look.
Joshua smiled at her. "What's the matter, Mistress?"
Watching Joshua play dumb, Matthew sneered. "I was talking to Ms. Byrne. Who do you think you are to butt in?"
"Oh? Really?" Joshua replied casually. "Too bad she's my mistress—and you're not even remotely related to her."
Matthew looked Veronica in the eye, searching for some kind of answer. Then he said, "Is that so? Ms. Byrne, I thought we were friends."
Veronica immediately nodded. "Of course we are. Matthew, don't listen to him. He's just being ridiculous."
But her words didn't make Matthew feel any better. To him, it felt like she was subtly taking Joshua's side under the guise of a scolding—as if she and Joshua were already close.
"Glad to hear it," Matthew said lightly, then turned and walked towards the other end of the corridor.
Once Matthew was gone, Veronica frowned and turned to Joshua, confused and a little frustrated. "What was that about? You haven't seen Matthew in a while, and the moment you did, you were so mean to him."
Joshua looked at Veronica, a sly glint in his eyes. He suddenly leaned in close and said in a low, attractive voice, "What makes you think I'd be friendly to my rival in love? Mistress, I thought that kiss already made my feelings clear."
Veronica was startled by his sudden move. She instinctively took a step back, biting her lip as a faint blush crept up her cheeks.
Even though they both knew what that kiss meant, Veronica couldn't help but feel a little shy when Joshua suddenly brought it up.
She glared at Joshua and scolded, "What nonsense are you spouting? Matthew and I are just friends—not whatever you're imagining."
Joshua chuckled softly, seemingly unconcerned by Veronica's explanation. He continued, "I know you are just friends, but he doesn't see you that way. He has romantic feelings for you."
'Matthew has feelings for me?' Veronica thought, a tangle of emotions welling up inside her.
She didn't want to hurt anyone, so she tried to make sure she and Matthew stayed just friends.
She took a deep breath, looked into Joshua's eyes, and said seriously, "Joshua, what we have is important to me. But I also see Matthew as a friend. I don't want misunderstandings or drama to come between us because of him."
Joshua nodded slightly, his gaze deep and pensive, as if he was weighing some important decision.
In a soft voice, he said, "Mistress, I'm sure you've noticed—both the Holland family and the Fraser family have been unusually active lately. Matthew and his family have been making frequent appearances, especially in politics."
