Veronica nodded slightly with a worried expression. She knew full well that Matthew's ambitions didn't stop there. He'd always been looking for opportunities to expand his influence, and Joshua was no different; he was never one to settle for the status quo.
Both of them were the best in their respective families, and the confrontation between them was almost inevitable.
However, Veronica didn't want to see the two of them get hurt because of the interests of their families.
Both Joshua and Matthew meant a lot to her. She didn't want to take sides. If the two of them really ended up on opposing paths, no matter how things turned out, she'd be stuck in the middle—and that thought alone made her feel torn.
After parting ways with Joshua, Veronica felt a mix of emotions swirling inside her. She headed home, planning to take a bath to relax. But the moment she stepped through the door, she sensed slight movement behind her.
She turned her head vigilantly and saw a figure approaching quickly. In the blink of an eye, they were pressed tightly against her back.
Veronica was badly frightened by the sudden situation, thinking this person—like the ones before—had come for her psychic power.
She tried to turn around to see, but the person behind her seemed to be prepared and quickly grabbed her outstretched wrist with one hand.
Veronica struggled, but the person had a shockingly strong grip, and she couldn't break free. In a moment of desperation, she kicked back, hoping the person would let go, out of pain.
But the attacker anticipated her move. With a gentle pull, they spun her around until she fell straight into their arms.
Only then did Veronica see the person's face. "Matthew?! You scared the life out of me!" she snapped, so angry that she wanted to punch him. "Why didn't you say anything?"
Matthew's lips curled into a small, playful smile. He let out a low chuckle and asked softly, "We're friends?" His tone was full of doubt, as if he was questioning whether that label made sense.
Confused and slightly taken aback, Veronica looked at him and said, "Yeah. That's what we've always been, right?"
To her, "friend" was a simple, genuine word—one that stood for a close and sincere bond.
However, Matthew didn't seem to think so. At some point, without Veronica noticing, his tendrils had wrapped themselves around her waist, drawing her in until she was pressed uncomfortably close to him.
Veronica subconsciously struggled to break free, but Matthew held her even more tightly. When she reached out to push him, her hand brushed against something slippery. "What the hell is that?!" she shouted in fear, glaring at him.
"You've seen it before, haven't you, Ms. Byrne?" Matthew's voice was low and teasing, but with a chill that ma Veronica's arms.
In the dim lighting, Matthew looked mysterious and eerie. He held Veronica tightly, and one of his tendrils crept up and brushed aside part of her shirt.
Veronica was pinned so tightly against him that she couldn't even squirm away. The moment that cold, slimy sensation touched her skin, her whole body broke out in goosebumps.
It was such a strange feeling that she couldn't help but tremble. Her heart raced, and her face flushed. "Matthew, what are you doing?!" she barked, her voice laced with anger and embarrassment.
She tried to break free from Matthew's grip, but his icy hands held her tightly, making her unable to move.
Matthew's eyes were deep and cold as he watched Veronica struggle. He didn't seem to plan to let her go, and no matter how much she struggled and shouted, he remained indifferent.
His gaze was fixed on Veronica, as if he were admiring his own masterpiece, savoring the thrill of control. He could feel the tendrils coiling around her, one loop at a time, soaking in the warmth of her skin.
