Veronica stood in front of Joshua's door, deeply conflicted, hesitating whether to knock on the tightly shut door.
Her eyes lingered on the door, as if hoping to see through it and into Joshua's mind. She wanted to ask Joshua for an answer, but she was afraid of hearing something she didn't want to hear.
She feared that Joshua really had been the one who ordered the hit on Matthew—just as she'd suspected. And if that was true, she had no idea how she'd face such a brutal truth.
And yet, if she didn't ask, she'd be stuck in this whirlwind of doubt, unable to find peace.
Veronica took a deep breath, gathered her courage, and finally raised her hand to knock. She heard soft footsteps from inside. Her heartbeat quickened.
She stood there, tense, hoping Joshua would give her a clear answer—something that could free her from this torment.
The door opened. Joshua was stunned to see Veronica standing there. Almost instantly, a gentle smile appeared on his face. "Mistress, what brings you here? Please, come in."
But Veronica didn't move. She stood at the threshold, looking hesitant, and said, "I'm not coming in." She looked at Joshua, struggling to find the right words to ask about what had happened last night.
After a pause, she finally mustered the courage and asked, her voice slightly nervous, "Joshua, I need to know—was that man from last night really dead?"
The smile on Joshua's face froze for a split second, but he quickly masked his reaction and answered with a relaxed tone, "Yes, Mistress. He took poison before he even got to the cell.
"I suppose he was afraid I'd torture him, so he chose to end his life on his own terms."
Veronica might have a simple heart, but she wasn't naive. She could tell Joshua was hiding something. Her eyes sharpened, and she pressed on, "Then can you take me to see him?"
Joshua frowned, seeming reluctant to talk about this. Trying to brush it off, he said with a light tone, "He's already dead. Why would you want to see him?" There was a trace of helplessness in his voice, like he was suggesting the whole thing was no big deal.
But Veronica didn't back down. She knew Joshua well. Joshua rarely refused her requests, but he was doing so now, which only confirmed her suspicion that he was hiding something.
"I know you probably think this is no big deal," Veronica said, her tone firmer, "but to me, knowing the truth matters a lot. I hope you can take me to see the man, even if it's just to satisfy my curiosity."
Joshua's smile faltered, and he looked a bit hurt. "Mistress, what do you mean by 'the truth'? You don't trust me?" he asked. His voice carried a hint of confusion and disappointment, as if he were deeply wounded by Veronica's suspicion.
But his reaction only intensified Veronica's suspicion. She stared intently at Joshua, searching his eyes for any trace of uncertainty.
Then she said, "Am I not allowed to know anything about the man who tried to kill Matthew? Joshua, what are you keeping from me?" Her tone was calm but firm. She clearly wasn't okay with being kept in the dark.
Joshua fell silent, seemingly backed into a corner by Veronica's questioning.
He took a deep breath and finally spoke. "Mistress, I admit there are things I haven't told you. But please believe me—I would never do anything to hurt you." His voice, as always, carried a sense of sincerity and firmness.
