"Mistress, I have to be honest with you. I really didn't mean to deceive you," he said, his voice laced with regret and frustration. His eyes were filled with guilt.
Veronica looked at him in silence for a while, as if weighing something in her mind. Eventually, she said slowly, "Joshua, I've always trusted you. I didn't want to believe you could be involved in something as low as an assassination. So what's the truth?"
Joshua's dark-golden slit-pupiled eyes flickered. He took a deep breath and began explaining. "I came here today to tell you why I lied to you that day. It was because the assassin was from the Holland family."
Veronica was taken aback. "Someone from the Holland family?"
Joshua nodded. "Yes. That night, I questioned him and found out he was a Holland. I assumed the matriarch had sent him to kill Matthew. I asked her about it, but I didn't get a response that night."
He paused for a second before continuing, "The next day, when you asked me about it, I was afraid you'd think I was involved. I was also worried about damaging the Holland family's reputation, so I said the man was already dead.
"Later, the matriarch sent a female to handle this, and only then did I know someone had acted on their own, colluding with people from the Interstellar Political Center to assassinate Matthew. They caused all this trouble together, but the people from the Center looked like they had no involvement whatsoever."
Veronica fell into deep thought, her mind full of doubts. She had always believed that she and Joshua shared a deep sense of trust. But now, she realized she'd gotten it all wrong.
She took a deep breath, turned her back to Joshua, and asked, her voice tinged with disappointment, "Joshua, don't you trust me?"
Joshua was taken aback by her words. His brows furrowed as he stared at her back and quickly replied, "Mistress, I trust you most."
Veronica shook her head slightly and said flatly, "Joshua, I would never doubt you just because you're part of the Holland family. In fact, I'd be more inclined to believe you, because you're the one I trust most.
"But you chose to keep it from me. It makes me feel like maybe I don't matter that much to you."
Joshua felt a mix of emotions as he heard this. He knew that what he had done had disappointed Veronica. He took a deep breath, stepped forward, and hugged her from behind.
His voice was low and sincere as he said, "I'm sorry, Mistress. This was my mistake. I thought I was being clever, that hiding it would keep things simple.
"But all it did was make you doubt me. I shouldn't have done that. Please stop being mad at me. I promise I'll treasure the trust between us more, and I'll never let you down again."
Veronica knew that this situation also stemmed from her own lack of trust in him. If she truly believed in him, she wouldn't have thought he'd tried to kill Matthew.
She gave a small nod, turned around, and leaned into Joshua's arms. Then she said softly, "Joshua, I believe you. But I hope that from now on, we can be honest with each other. Whatever we face, we face it together."
Joshua took a deep breath, looked at Veronica with determined eyes, and said resolutely, "I understand, Mistress. I promise—no more secrets. I'll be open with you, about everything."
Hearing his promise, Veronica finally started to feel better. For days, she'd been angry and disappointed over his lie. Every time she thought about it, a heavy feeling settled in her chest.
But now that everything was out in the open, her mood began to lighten. She gave a small nod, her gaze softening as she looked at Joshua.
Their eyes met, and the tension in the room gradually melted away.
Veronica knew that even though this situation had caused a rift between them, as long as they were honest with each other and showed mutual understanding, their relationship would surely get back on track.
