Veronica had spent quite some effort, but she finally managed to locate Matthew using her psychic power. She saw his desolate figure and felt an indescribable emotion welling up inside her.
She couldn't help but walk toward him. "Hi, Matthew," she called softly.
Matthew turned around in disbelief, a flash of complex emotions crossing his eyes. "Mistress?"
Veronica cut him off, her tone firm. "Matthew, listen to me. I didn't mean to not soothe you. I genuinely had no idea that was something I needed to do after bonding. If Joshua hadn't told me, I would still be in the dark."
She looked at Matthew and saw his eyes light up instantly, as if stars had fallen into them. "I'm so sorry, Matthew. I had no idea it would upset you so much," Veronica apologized sincerely.
Matthew couldn't help but step forward and embrace her, his voice trembling slightly. "It's okay. As long as I know you don't despise me, that's all that matters."
Veronica shook her head, warmth flooding her heart. "How could I ever despise you, Matthew? I meant every word I said. It's not that I didn't want to bond with you. I just thought someone as amazing as you shouldn't be tied down by anything."
Matthew held her tightly, as if trying to merge her into his very being. "I'm willing to be bound to you," he whispered.
Their figures stood closely together in the lingering rays of the sunset, as if time had stopped, leaving only the sound of their heartbeats echoing around them.
Matthew felt her heartbeat, the strong pulsing seeming to speak of the vitality of her life. Yet within it, he felt an inexplicable sense of inferiority.
He was afraid that Veronica would leave him, and afraid that he wouldn't be able to give her enough love and security.
Silently, he extended his tentacle, gently yet firmly wrapping it around Veronica. The tentacle seemed to come alive, tenderly and resolutely enveloping her, leaving her no room to escape.
'You are mine,' Matthew murmured to himself, 'I want you, all for myself.'
Veronica sensed Matthew's unease. She didn't struggle or resist. She knew that at this moment, Matthew needed her, needed her understanding and acceptance.
She stood there quietly, allowing Matthew's tentacle to hold her tightly, as if trying to fuse her into his body.
A flicker of darkness crossed Matthew's eyes, a manifestation of his possessiveness toward Veronica and his own inner turmoil.
'Don't blame me for this. It's your choice,' he told himself, but also conveyed to Veronica that his love was deep and passionate, irresistible.
Matthew stood at the doorway of Joshua's study and coughed twice.
Joshua looked up, his gaze casually sweeping over the doorway. "Come in," he said.
Matthew walked in reluctantly, feeling a bit awkward about thanking his romantic rival.
If it hadn't been for Joshua's intervention, Matthew might have had to swallow his pride and figure everything out on his own, without knowing Veronica's true feelings.
Joshua didn't look up at Matthew while listening indifferently. "Thanks," Matthew mumbled.
Although Matthew didn't spell it out, both of them knew exactly what he was referring to.
Joshua inwardly scoffed. He had actually regretted telling Veronica in the first place. He couldn't understand why he had been so magnanimous toward his rival.
Joshua hadn't forgotten how Matthew had fanned the flames while he and Veronica had been having their little spat.
Thinking of this, Joshua couldn't help but retort sarcastically, "I am, after all, her most important bondmate. I should have some magnanimity, shouldn't I?"
He truly needed to have magnanimity; otherwise, he would have killed Chase on the first day.
