Freda POV
“Freda,” alpha Levi said, “I wanted to pick you up but I heard you moved out from your old apartment. Why did you never tell me that you moved?”
Pick me up?
Suddenly, I felt like I went back to my childhood.
A long time ago, my father Levi was still very caring and loving. He would pick me up at school and secretly give me a bag of snacks. He would let me ride on his shoulders and listen to me as I kept chattering about the fun things that happened at school. And he would shift into his wolf form and play with me in the jungle until my mother told us to come home.
At that time, that house was still a warm place for me and I felt like I belonged there.
But then, it didn’t feel like home anymore.
Ever since my mother passed away, Levi put all his attention on Natasha and her mother and I became more and more distant. Compared to Natasha who always knew what to say, he naturally didn’t care for the daughter who was odd and eccentric like me.
“Let’s go, Freda. They’re already in the private room,” alpha Levi said in a gentle voice, “the chef made apple pie and I know it’s your favorite…”
“I stopped liking them many years ago,” I disrupted him coldly and felt kind of curious, “do you know what my favorite food is for now?”
After saying that, I knew I made Levi look like an uncaring father and he seemed very embarrassed. I assumed he must have forgotten all about it. We hadn’t had meals together for a very long time and each time we met, we always had something serious to talk about.
Before we even knew it, we had drifted apart.
But today, alpha Levi suppressed all his anger and hard feelings and just smiled at me. He opened the door for me and said to the people inside, “Freda’s here.”
The people in the private room all looked up.
I finally knew why alpha Levi was being so nice to me and even became nostalgic about things that had changed ten years ago. It turned out he was trying to impress me with these ridiculous memories.
Besides alpha Hunter and Luna Vanessa of the Blood Moon Pack, there were also Carl, Natasha, and Olivia in the room.
“Freda, sit over here,” alpha Hunter said. He was a strong yet gentle alpha who was always so elegant. But Vanessa who was sitting right next to him looked rather cold. She just glanced at me with no expression on her face like I was a nobody.
Vanessa had never liked me so much in the past. I wasn’t surprised at her attitude since Carl and I weren’t going to get married and I told everyone Carl cheated on me with Natasha, which harmed the companies run by the Fullmoon Pack.
“Alpha Hunter, Luna Vanessa, glad to see you here,” I sat by alpha Hunter and ignored those who had been staring at me. I didn’t want to see Natasha put on a show again.
Alpha Levi didn’t force me to greet Olivia this time and forced a smile, “Since we’re all here, we can tell the waiters to start serving the dishes now. Freda, they’re all your favorites.”
“No need for that,” I interrupted them frigidly and put down my phone, “just tell me what it is. I can’t eat with them in my sight.”
Natasha, who was sitting right across the table, turned pale and I could see Carl hold her hand under the table, trying to comfort her. Carl peeped at me as if he was going to say something to defend Natasha. But since alpha Hunter was here, there was nothing much he could say.
Alpha Hunter sighed and said with a hint of guilt, “Freda, it’s all Carl’s fault and the Blood Moon Pack has failed you. Vanessa and I all want you to be a member of our family.”
Luna Vanessa smiled with an ounce of sarcasm in her eyes.
“Your mother and I were friends and I’ve known you ever since you were a baby. The engagement between the Blood Moon Pack and the Fullmoon Pack has always been something that we were excited about. Freda, I’m terribly sorry and regretful about what happened.”
After I found out Carl was cheating on me with Natasha, this was the most sincere apology I had ever received.
“Alpha Hunter, I’m not sorry or regretful about this engagement at all,” I glimpsed at that couple who had been sticking together across the table with contempt.
My sarcastic tone provoked Carl and made him mad. He tried to say something out of spite but Natasha hastily grabbed his hand and comforted him by stroking his hands. Then she said to me in a sweet voice, “Freda, if you really hate us and our father, I’m willing to back off and let you have this engagement.”
“Let me have it?” I was so mad that I started laughing. I was shocked at how shameless Natasha could be and said, “Natasha, if that belongs to you in the first place, then you can say you’ll let me have it. But are you the one whose name is written on the engagement contract? Is Carl your fiancé?”
Even though I didn’t want to fight for this man, I didn’t want Natasha to feel like she got to enjoy what belonged to me.
My words made her face even paler and she said, “That’s not what I meant.”
“Stop acting,” I mocked.
“Enough,” Levi couldn’t tolerate this anymore and said gloomily, “Freda, no matter what happened, Natasha is your sister. What you said in the press conference really made her look bad and now you’ve put the Fullmoon Pack and the Blood Moon Pack in a very difficult position. You went too far this time.”
“Shit! Who does he think he is to talk down to us!” Cam had always been a mild wolf and even she couldn’t take this anymore. She was so irritated that she wanted to come out and smashed their head with wine bottles.
“I went too far? Then what about the things that Natasha has done to me?” I questioned my father who thought he was being fair, “I know you’ve heard them saying I bullied Natasha.”
Natasha hastily spoke up, “I’ve never done things like that! It might be Evelyn! Please trust me for once, Freda, I’ve never said that you bullied me. I didn’t blame you for what happened to my baby…”
Speaking of the baby, Carl couldn’t help but roared, “Freda! You’re the one who killed our baby and now you wanna destroy the Blood Moon Pack and the Fullmoon Pack?”
Natasha seemed to be overwhelmed by the pain and started crying in Carl’s arms.
Her weeping and what Carl just said finally made Levi lose control of his temper. Alpha Levi began questioning me grimly, “Freda, do you really wanna destroy our tribes? Do you really wanna take things this far?”
That was ridiculous.
They were the ones who had been pressuring me. Why did they get to question me?
“Alpha Levi,” I let out a cold smile and said calmly, “I wouldn’t have done this if you hadn’t given my mother’s life’s work, the Moonlight Jewelry, to your mistress’s child. If Natasha hadn’t held the press conference, I wouldn’t have had the chance to tell everyone they betrayed me.”
Levi froze and there was nothing but dead silence in the room.
Finally, alpha Hunter broke the ice by saying, “Freda, it’s all Carl’s fault. He never cherished you and I apologize on behalf of him. I know you’re not going to marry Carl anymore. I’ve got a proposal for you and I wonder if you’re willing to listen.”
I had prepared for this before I came but my heart still sank when I heard what alpha Hunter just said. Even though alpha Hunter had always cared for me, he still chose to be on their side when it came to his interest.
I looked down, trying to hold back my feelings. Then I looked him in the eyes and said, “Tell me about it.”
Levi spoke up first, “We made an announcement that the one who was supposed to marry Carl is you, Freda. But you don’t have any affection for him so Natasha fulfilled this marriage contract for you so she wasn’t the third wheel.”
“And I’ll give you the Moonlight Jewelry as compensation, Freda.”
He was saying that like he was doing me a favor and it was the right thing to do.
I couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
