Sleep wouldn't come to me that night—again.
If Vincent Lowell was so devoted to his wife, why had he sought me out?
The answer was obvious: he was terrified of her finding out about his affairs. Maybe next time, I could use that against him—threaten to expose everything.
My thoughts swirled until exhaustion finally pulled me under.
Days passed with no word from Vincent. Maybe he'd actually chosen his family for once.
I buried myself in work, refusing to let my mind wander back to him.
Teaching seniors was relentless. Late-night study sessions kept me at school until ten, leaving me drained.
That evening, I took the subway home alone. By the time I stepped onto the sidewalk, the streets were deserted—just me and the flickering glow of streetlights.
Then I heard it—the quiet but unmistakable sound of footsteps closing in behind me.
My stomach dropped.
If this was a mugging, I didn't have much cash. But what if they didn't stop there? What if they followed me inside?
What if they wanted something worse?
My pulse spiked as I sped up. Then—a hand clamped over my wrist.
"Hel—!" My cry was cut short by a rush of expensive cologne.
Vincent Lowell.
"Quiet. It's me." His voice was low, rough. "I've missed you."
"Principal Lowell?" I gaped at him. "What are you—? I thought you were with your wife tonight."
"I wanted to see where you live." His smile was all teeth. "You've been here for months, and I've never gotten a proper tour."
"But... it's empty. Now's not a good time."
His eyes darkened at that.
"Come on, Natalia." His voice dripped with false charm. "Not even a cup of tea? Is that how you treat a guest?"
The threat beneath his words was clear.
I hesitated. If I refused, would he make my life at school hell?
Swallowing my unease, I led him inside. The second the door clicked shut, he slammed it behind us.
"Principal Lowell—!"
"Shh."
I tried to pull away, but his grip only tightened.
