Vincent Lowell was shaking like a leaf. The intruder loomed over us—6'3" of pure menace, making Vincent's 5'9" frame seem pathetic. And at 5'3", I stood no chance.
"Please, don't kill me!" Vincent dropped to his knees, his voice cracking. "Take her—just let me go! I swear I won't say a word. I didn't even see your face!"
My stomach turned. This was the same man who'd charmed me at school, who'd whispered sweet promises moments ago. Now he was groveling, ready to throw me to the wolves.
The intruder let out a dark laugh. "Real brave, huh? Weren't you just playing hero?" His gaze cut to me, sharp as the blade in his hand. "Empty your pockets. And take a good look at your knight in shining armor. Still think he deserves to walk out of here? Tie him up."
My hands trembled as I bound Vincent's wrists, the rope biting into his skin. The intruder yanked it tighter, then jerked his chin toward the bed. "Move."
The cold press of steel against my throat sent a shudder through me.
"All your cash. Now."
I scrambled to the nightstand, shoving a few crumpled bills into his hand.
"That's it?" He flicked through the money, eyes narrowing.
"My first paycheck isn't until next week," I choked out. "I just graduated—I can barely make rent." Tears streaked down my face, raw and desperate.
Something flickered in his expression.
The machete thudded onto the mattress. Then his hand was on my face, rough fingers tracing my jaw. My heart hammered.
"Soft," he murmured, voice low. "Heard you earlier. Got me all worked up." His grip tightened. "Make it worth my while, and maybe I'll let you walk out of here in one piece."
