I lay trembling on the bed, my whole body shaking like a leaf in the wind.
Richard kept murmuring reassurances in that smooth voice of his. "First time jitters are normal, sweetheart. Just breathe and go with it."
His patience was endless, walking me through each step with the care of someone teaching a dance. I moved like I was in a trance, following his lead without question.
We were right at the edge of the precipice when the door flew open with a bang.
"Dad?" Sophia's voice cut through the moment. "Emily disappeared after saying she was going to the bathroom. She's totally vanished."
Richard reacted lightning-fast, shoving me beneath the covers with one strong push. "Try the study," he said, voice miraculously steady. "Thought I saw her heading that way earlier."
The comforter became my suffocating prison as I clung to Richard's side, every nerve straining to catch the conversation outside. Why wouldn't Sophia just leave? She kept making small talk while I slowly baked beneath the blankets.
Just when I thought I might pass out from lack of air, Richard chose that moment to let his hands roam. I bit my lip hard, but a tiny whimper escaped.
"What was that noise?" Sophia's voice sharpened with suspicion.
"Just my phone," Richard lied effortlessly. "Probably some autoplay video."
"You should sleep," he added in that parental tone. "It's late."
"Ugh, fine," Sophia groaned. But before leaving, she couldn't resist teasing, "Relax Dad, I'm not a kid anymore. No need to hide your... activities from me." Her voice turned mischievous. "Though seriously? You should really find a proper stepmom already."
"Enough nonsense!" Richard's mock-scolding chased her out the door.
The moment she left, I bolted from my hiding place. But Richard caught my wrist, pressing a feather-light kiss to my forehead. "Don't stress, darling," he murmured. "When we're on the same page... there'll be plenty more where that came from."
His meaning burned through me, setting my cheeks aflame all over again.
That night, sleep refused to come. I stared at Sophia's peaceful face glowing in the moonlight, a lead weight settling in my chest.
Was I really about to become my best friend's stepmother?
