The entire hall erupted in chaos.
Everyone knew Asher and I had been at each other's throats since childhood. Whenever we met, we either argued or fought. Nobody expected him to be the one I was waiting for.
Derek's face turned ashen instantly. He strode forward. "Sienna, what the hell do you mean?"
I ignored him completely. My gaze stayed locked on Asher. He stood a few steps away, hands shoved in his pockets, looking like none of this concerned him.
But I caught the sharp way his eyes flicked between Derek and me.
"I said, I choose him." I raised my hand, my slender finger pointing straight at Asher.
The words hit like a bomb detonating in the ballroom.
Guests burst into shocked murmurs that flooded the entire venue.
"What? She chose Asher?"
"Aren't they sworn enemies?"
"God, look at Derek's face..."
Derek's complexion shifted from pale to white to burning red. He grabbed my wrist roughly. "Are you out of your mind? Do you even know what you're saying?"
I yanked my hand free with cold efficiency. "I'm perfectly clear-headed."
"Impossible!" Derek's voice squeezed through gritted teeth. "You clearly—"
"Clearly what?" I cut him off, a mocking smile curving my lips. "Clearly chased after you for twenty years? Clearly wouldn't marry anyone but you?"
I shook my head slowly. "Derek, you think way too highly of yourself."
Derek staggered back like he'd been clubbed over the head.
He'd never seen me like this—eyes glacial, voice razor-sharp, looking at him like a complete stranger.
Lucien and his crew immediately closed ranks. Caleb frowned. "Sienna, don't joke around like this."
"Yeah," Raven chimed in, "we all know you're crazy about Derek."
Looking at their fake faces made my stomach churn with disgust.
"I'm not joking." Each word dropped like ice. "I said I choose Asher. Are you all deaf?"
The hall plunged into eerie silence again. Every eye turned to Asher, waiting for his reaction.
He walked over slowly, looking down at me like he wanted to see straight through to my soul.
"Princess," he said with a cold laugh, "don't try your little games on me."
I tilted my chin up to meet his stare, not backing down an inch. "I'm not playing games."
Their gazes clashed in midair, neither willing to yield. The surrounding guests held their breath, afraid to miss a single detail.
That's when Rachel suddenly pushed through to Derek's side, clutching his sleeve with trembling fingers. "Derek..." Her voice cracked with tears. "Is Miss Sienna just throwing a tantrum? This is all my fault. I shouldn't have come..."
Derek immediately wrapped his arm around her shoulders protectively. "It's not your fault." He whirled on me, eyes blazing with fury. "Sienna, do you really need to humiliate me like this?"
Watching their intimate display, I felt nothing but calm.
"I'm not humiliating anyone," I said evenly. "I'm simply making a choice."
Asher suddenly chuckled, breaking the tension. He turned to Derek. "She chose me. Got a problem with that?"
The words sounded casual, but carried undeniable authority.
Derek's face turned ugly. "Asher, don't get cocky! I just made a mistake. She doesn't love you!"
"So what?" Asher shrugged. "It's just an engagement. Love isn't required."
Hearing those words made my heart clench painfully. I knew Asher was being deliberately cold, but the indifference still cut deep.
Before Derek could respond, my father stepped forward. "Enough. Since Sienna has made her choice, today's ceremony ends here."
He looked around the room. "Thank you all for coming. Please, continue enjoying the party."
The guests tactfully dispersed, though whispered conversations buzzed throughout the hall.
I watched Derek storm off angrily, along with the complicated looks from Lucien's group, and finally exhaled in relief.
When I turned back to Asher, he was already walking away.
"Wait!" I hurried after him, blocking his path in the corridor. "Where are you going?"
Asher stopped but didn't turn around. "Home."
"We need to talk." I reached for his sleeve, but he sidestepped smoothly.
"Nothing to discuss." Asher finally faced me, eyes arctic. "I don't know what game you're playing, but I'm not interested in participating."
"It's not a game!" I said desperately. "I'm serious!"
Asher studied me for a long moment, then suddenly gripped my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze.
"Sienna, you chased Derek for twenty years, and now you suddenly want to marry me?"
His thumb brushed across my lips, but his voice stayed terrifyingly cold. "You think I'd believe that?"
My lashes fluttered. He was too close—close enough that I could see my own reflection in his eyes.
"If you don't believe me, that's fine," I whispered. "But please give me a chance."
Asher released me and stepped back. "Why?"
"Because..." I bit my lip, ultimately deciding not to mention the rebirth. "Because I finally see who's worth it."
Something flickered in Asher's eyes before the coldness returned.
He turned to leave, tossing back only one sentence: "Tomorrow morning, ten sharp. Hollis Group headquarters. Don't be late."
I stood there watching his tall figure disappear down the corridor, unable to stop a small smile from tugging at my lips.
This went better than I'd hoped. At least he was willing to give me a chance.
In the corner of the ballroom, Rachel stared daggers in my direction, her eyes practically dripping with venom.
She whispered to Derek beside her: "Derek, Miss Sienna must be under Asher's threats. We can't just stand by and watch..."
Derek clenched his fists, a sinister gleam flashing in his eyes. "Don't worry. I won't let them get what they want."
