Chris brought Jake to find Hurley.
Jake still hasn't woken up. His wounds have been cleaned up, and the doctor said the sedative wouldn't cause much harm to his body; he'd be fine once he woke up.
It's just that the whip marks had torn through the skin and flesh. Looking at them on a child, it's just unbearable.
"Give me the child!" Hurley gently took Jake, feeling deeply distressed.
Seeing the swollen red handprint on Jake's face, flames seemed to bloom deep within Hurley's pupils.
Originally intimidating, now no one dared to approach him even more.
Except for Sophie.
Sophie walked over. "How is Jake?"
Because Jake's face was turned towards Hurley's embrace, Sophie didn't see it.
She only saw that his clothes were all dirty, and those clothes were the ones she personally picked out when they were going out.
It was just for Damon's selection, and she hadn't expected these two kids to become so close that they'd exchange clothes to wear.
But she had done such things when she was a child too.
She thought Jessica's clothes were very pretty, and Jessica thought the same about hers, so the two of them exchanged clothes.
Not sure if hearing a familiar voice, the child in his arms stirred.
"Mom... mommy..."
Hurley, "..."
His son, despite being injured, didn't call for 'daddy' but called out 'mommy' here?
"Jake! Daddy's here, everything's okay!" Hurley's voice was gentle. Maybe upon seeing Jake, some of the hostility in him eased a bit.
Jake slowly opened her eyes, "Daddy..."
Why was he in Daddy's arms? What happened?
He remembered being in the mall, and then... and then he didn't remember anything.
"Does it hurt?" Hurley's hand gently caressed his son's face.
"Hurley, why don't you let me take a look?" Sophie's voice came from the side.
Sophie is a doctor, she can examine Jake's condition.
Upon hearing Sophie's voice, Jake became unsettled.
He covered his face, "Mask, Daddy's mask, and where's my hat? My hat!"
He couldn't let Mommy see his face, couldn't let Mommy know his identity!
Though not sure what happened, Jake knew something must have gone wrong.
"Chris!" Hurley thought his son wanted the mask because of the injury on his face, making him unable to be seen by others.
Chris said, "Young Master's hat and mask are both dirty."
"Mr. Hurley, can you let me take a look at Jake?" Sophie was still concerned.
Although Jake liked Mommy very much, it wasn't the right time. He was in pain, and he must have looked terrible.
"No, I don't want to!" Jake struggled, not wanting Mommy to see him in such a sorry state.
"Okay, I won't let her see."
Sophie's request was denied, yet for some reason, her heart felt like it was pricked by something sharp, a piercing pain that shot through her entire nerve, like something was blocking it.
If she hadn't taken the child to the mall, it wouldn't have been so coincidental for Jake to encounter trouble.
Jake is extremely, extremely innocent.
Jake must really dislike her now, blaming her, probably.
"I'm sorry, Jake," Sophie apologized.
Upon hearing Mommy's voice, Jake suddenly teared up. Mommy didn't do anything wrong; Mommy was the best mommy.
It's just that Mommy didn't like him, didn't like Jake.
And right now, he was Jake.
Tears streamed down, Jake rarely cried, whether scolded or hurt, he wouldn't shed a tear.
But now, he felt so miserable.
