Asher's gaze cut through me like a blade, piercing straight into my eyes.
Only a desk lamp illuminated the study, its amber glow casting sharp golden edges along his silhouette.
I raised an eyebrow, fingertips tapping lightly against my coffee cup rim. "Meaning what?"
"Meaning from today forward," Asher said, each word deliberate, "in the eyes of the world, our two families will be completely bound together."
He narrowed his eyes. "If you're just trying to spite Derek, there's no need to go this far."
The coffee cup hit the desk with a heavy thud.
I almost laughed from sheer frustration.
I'd put up my most valuable mineral assets, and Asher was still questioning my motives?
This moment of silence seemed to trigger some misunderstanding in Asher.
He straightened, his eyes instantly turning cold. "I don't need your charity."
"Charity?" I stood up, slapping a document against his chest. "Do you really think so little of yourself?"
Asher caught the falling document and froze the moment he opened the first page.
These were transfer agreements for three diamond mining rights my family owned in Africa, already sealed with my personal stamp.
"This isn't charity," I said, turning toward the door. My heels clicked crisply against the marble floor. "It's my trust."
My hand rested on the door handle. I suddenly turned back, mimicking Asher's tone from that day in the hospital room. "You won't let me lose, will you?"
Asher stared at me for two seconds, then let out a soft chuckle. "Of course not."
After the door closed, silence reclaimed the study. Asher remained seated for a long time.
He flipped through the document carefully—every page bore my signature, even the notary seals were in place.
This wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision. This was premeditated.
His phone suddenly buzzed. Leon's message read: [President Asher, three of the four major families have united with three banks. They'll file to freeze our liquid assets tomorrow.]
Asher's gaze fell on the valuation figure on the document's final page. This was enough to cover all of the Hollis family's funding gaps after the asset freeze.
He walked to the floor-to-ceiling window. The city blazed with lights in the darkness.
A year ago when he left London, I was still chasing after Derek.
And now... this was too abnormal.
Asher dialed a number. "Investigate all of Sienna's activities over the past six months. Focus on her and Derek's relationship... no, prioritize whether she's had any contact with people from Switzerland."
After hanging up, his fingers unconsciously traced the document's edge.
Logic told him this was likely a trap, but when he remembered the brightness in my eyes when I said "trust"...
"...Damn it." He cursed under his breath, loosening his tie.
The next morning, the financial world erupted.
Just as the four major families prepared to freeze Hollis Group's assets through the banks, a Swiss consortium suddenly announced a 5 billion injection into the Hollis family.
Even more shocking—this funding was channeled through my company, under Sienna's name.
When this news broke, Derek exploded in the conference room. "Find out! I want to know exactly what game Sienna and Asher are playing!"
Meanwhile, I sat leisurely in the Hollis Group president's office, browsing the morning's financial headlines.
"Satisfied?" Asher entered, followed by a team of assistants carrying documents.
I waved my phone. "Impressive work, Asher. You turned the four families' siege into a joke in just one day."
The assistants set down their materials and tactfully withdrew.
Asher approached me, suddenly leaning down with his hands braced on either side of my chair, trapping me in the small space within his embrace.
"Why?" He looked directly into my eyes. "I remember those mines were your mother's trump card for you."
I caught the faint scent of ambergris on him, mixed with the bitter aroma of coffee from a sleepless night.
I tilted my head slightly, my red lips nearly brushing his chin. "Because I believe they'll only become more valuable in your hands."
Asher's pupils contracted slightly.
Just then, the office door burst open.
"Asher! What's the meaning of this?!" Derek stormed in furiously, but froze when he saw our intimate position.
I felt Asher's muscles tense noticeably.
I laughed softly, pushing him away and smoothing my skirt. "Young Master Derek, barging in without knocking is a terrible habit."
Derek's face turned ashen. "Sienna, do you think he truly cares? Don't you realize Asher is using you? He doesn't love you at all!"
Asher straightened unhurriedly, casually adjusting his cuffs. "You came to my company first thing in the morning just to spout this nonsense?"
"You think winning this round ends it?" Derek sneered. "The real show is just beginning."
After he slammed the door and left, the office returned to quiet.
Asher's gaze remained fixed on my face.
"What?" I raised an eyebrow. "Don't tell me Derek actually got to you?"
Asher suddenly reached out, his thumb brushing the corner of my lips.
"Sienna." His voice was low and dangerous. "You'd better not let me discover you're playing some game."
His fingertip was slightly rough, the friction creating a subtle sting.
I caught his wrist, meeting his eyes directly. "Asher, the one thing gamblers fear most is backing out mid-game."
I lightly bit his fingertip. "And I never have regrets."
That evening, Asher didn't return to the villa. Instead, he went to a private apartment, holding a freshly delivered investigation report.
The files showed that over the past six months, I'd cut almost all contact with Derek, yet repeatedly sent people to inquire about his activities in Switzerland.
Most strangely, three months ago I'd suddenly sold all the gifts Derek had given me, investing the proceeds entirely into an anonymous fund project.
Asher stood by the window, deep in thought. He felt like some crucial clue was slipping past him.
His phone suddenly lit up with a message from me: [There's an auction tomorrow. Would you accompany me?]
Asher stared at the message, the corner of his mouth involuntarily lifting. But quickly, he regained his composure.
He replied with a simple "Mm," then fed the investigation report into the shredder.
Whatever my agenda was, he would uncover it. But until then...
The glass before him reflected his slightly upturned lips.
