Deep in the night, Asher jolted awake to faint, labored breathing echoing through the hallway.
He pushed open my bedroom door to find me thrashing violently on the bed, cold sweat beading across my forehead, lips trembling as fragmented words spilled out:
"No... Derek... the car... blood..."
Asher frowned and stepped closer. Just as he reached out to wake me, I cried out with startling clarity:
"Asher... don't look at me... I... I look so ugly right now..."
His fingers froze mid-air. His pupils contracted sharply.
Nothing in his memory matched this moment, yet the words were too specific—too vivid, like they described an actual scene. What made it more unsettling was how my tone sounded as if I'd witnessed him... collecting my corpse.
The next morning, Asher sat in his study with thick investigation reports spread before him.
"We've got answers," Leon said, adjusting his glasses.
"Miss Sienna's behavior patterns over the past six months are completely different from before. The strangest part—" He pointed to a surveillance screenshot. "She suddenly withdrew all her investments from Derek the day before his fake death scheme."
Asher's expression darkened.
"There's more." Leon pulled out medical records. "Three months ago, Miss Sienna spiked a 104-degree fever. The first thing she did after waking up was send people to find you in Switzerland."
Asher's knuckles drummed against the desk, the rhythm accelerating.
Every clue pointed to one absurd conclusion—the current me seemed capable of predicting the future.
He closed the files. "Look into the background of that anonymous foundation project under her name."
At the charity gala, I entered in a flowing gown, my arm linked through Asher's.
I noticed his unusual silence tonight, how his fingertips unconsciously traced the rim of his wine glass. A habit when he was deep in thought.
"What's wrong? Something bothering you?" I asked softly.
Asher suddenly turned to me. "Remember our bet when we were ten?"
Without hesitation, I replied: "You lost and had to wear a dress to school. Uncle Hollis beat you so badly you couldn't get out of bed for three days."
I smiled, adding, "That silver ring I gave you was the prize."
Something flickered in Asher's eyes, but he pressed on: "Then do you know why I went abroad?"
"Because I told you a year ago that I didn't want to see you. But actually, you left because..." My words cut off abruptly.
I saw Asher's gaze turn razor-sharp. The air around us instantly froze.
"Sienna," Asher set down his glass, his voice so low only I could hear.
"I never told anyone the real reason I left the country." He stepped closer. "Who exactly are you?"
On the terrace, night wind carried the scent of flowers. I gripped the railing tightly, feeling panicked for the first time since my rebirth.
Asher stood in shadow, moonlight illuminating only half his profile, making him appear exceptionally stern.
"What if I told you..." I took a deep breath. "I died once. Would you believe me?"
Over the next twenty minutes, I laid bare everything—the betrayal, pain, and death from my previous life.
When I reached the night of the car accident, my voice began trembling uncontrollably: "All four of them stood across the street, watching me bleed to death... It was raining hard that night. My blood mixed with rainwater, flowing down half the street..."
Asher's expression shifted from shock to something more complex.
When I mentioned how he'd collected my body, his knuckles turned white from clenching too hard.
Silence stretched between us.
"So," Asher suddenly spoke, his voice cold as ice, "you chose me out of guilt? Because you saw me collecting your corpse? Then decided to compensate me?"
I snapped my head up. "No! I truly..."
"Enough." Asher cut me off. "I need time to think about our relationship."
He turned toward the door, his back rigid. "For now... let's not see each other."
I stood alone on the terrace, fingernails digging deep into my palms.
I should have expected this outcome. Someone as proud as Asher—how could he accept feelings born from guilt?
Laughter drifted from inside, mixed with Derek's smug voice: "Looks like Mr. Asher and Miss Sienna had a falling out?"
I wiped the moisture from my eyes and straightened my spine.
Just as I prepared to leave, my phone buzzed.
[Swiss bank account activated.]
[Three mineral rights properties transferred back to your name.]
Then came a text from an unknown number: [We're even.]
I froze.
What did that mean?
Money settled—was cutting ties with people the next step?
