Sophie had just intended to tell Hurley that she found out that Anabel was likely to be locked up in the attic.
She opened her lips to speak but didn't have time to elaborate as she heard a woman's voice coming from the other end of the phone.
"Hurley." Matilda walked in through the doorway, "I just talked to the doctor about Stephen's condition. It might take three months to half a year for him to recover."
"Shh, Mommy, Daddy is on the phone!"
Although Stephen spoke softly, Sophie still heard it clearly.
So Hurley was now by the side of his son and the woman who was his first love.
And she heard the voice of "Jake", addressing them as mommy and daddy.
She chuckled self-deprecatingly, realizing they were now a happy family of three.
Understanding that Hurley wouldn't believe her words, Sophie, who was once his wife, knew she had no credibility now. Hurley never believed her from the beginning, and now, as a stranger, it was even less likely.
"What did you just say?" Hurley only heard about the abuse of Anabel.
Jake was Anabel's biological brother, and the two children had a good relationship, so Jake would definitely not abuse Anabel .
Sophie recognized the wrong child, and it was very likely that Stephen was talking about it. Stephen had just returned to the country, so how could he possibly have the opportunity to do anything to Anabel.
"It's nothing, you pay more attention to Anabel, I'll hang up." Sophie hung up the phone quickly, not allowing herself to harbor any thoughts.
Hurley's heart sank when the phone was abruptly hung up.
He was not angry yet, so what was Sophie angry about?
"Hurley, who are you talking to on the phone?" Matilda walked in.
A hint of displeasure flashed across Hurley's face, and Matilda understood that is why she had spoken out of turn.
She currently had no authority to meddle in any of Hurley's affairs, not even the right to ask a single question.
"What about Anabel?"
"Anabel is sleeping in my car, you go and bring her up."
After saying that, Matilda went downstairs to the parking lot.
It was May now, and though the weather was not particularly hot, the temperature in the closed car was still high.
Anabel was locked inside the car. She was feeling unbearably hot, but she could not open the car door.
Just as she was about to suffocate, the car door finally opened, allowing the outside fresh air to circulate. Anabel felt like she had come back to life.
Matilda pulled her out, scolding, "What's wrong with you? Why didn't you come up just now? I was carrying Stephen and couldn't pay attention to you. I thought you had come out, so I had to search everywhere!"
"I'll take you to find your father. Be good and be obedient, you know, your father is busy, don't let your father worry, Jake is fine, now you have your grandmother with you."
"Now that Stephen is back, he will play with you and Jake often in the future. If he does anything wrong, you should be more patient, understand?"
Matilda was afraid that the child would talk nonsense in front of Hurley, so she had to warn Anabel earlier.
However, this little girl, Anabel, was much easier to deal with than Jake. She could not speak, and she was also timid.
Matilda roughly wiped away Anabel's tears and said, "Don't cry when you see your father!"
At the door of the hospital ward, Matilda picked up Anabel and brought her inside.
Pushing open the door, Anabel was about to struggle to break free from Matilda 's arms, then quickly ran towards Hurley and jumped into Hurley's arms.
Hurley also saw Anabel's swollen eyes and asked, "What happened to Anabel?"
Matilda explained, "She saw both brothers fall down the stairs and was scared, or maybe she was too worried, so she kept crying."
Anabel shook her head frantically. It's not like that!
She anxiously wanted to speak, but couldn't make a sound.
