In the corridor outside the emergency room, Hurley felt like every second was dragging on for ages.
After a short while, after Sophie finished her examination, she was taken to the hospital room.
"Doctor, how is she?" Hurley hurriedly approached, with Carl following behind.
"Which one of you is the patient's family?" The doctor looked at the two handsome men.
Hurley was taken aback. There were actually no family members of the patient here.
Upon hearing the doctor's question, Hurley realized the situation must be quite serious, but he couldn't afford to dwell on it.
"I am!" Hurley stepped forward.
The doctor glanced at him. "So she's your wife, right?"
In that moment, Hurley couldn't admit it nor deny it.
Meanwhile, Carl, feeling anxious, interjected, "Why are you so curious, doctor? How is she?"
"The patient is fine. She just inhaled some sedatives. She should wake up in about two hours after resting."
"What about her injuries then?"
"It's all superficial wounds, and they've been treated," the doctor said.
"But there was so much blood on her body, are you sure everything's fine? Shouldn't we check again?" Hurley still wasn't entirely reassured.
Sophie's condition looked so dire; he had to ensure she was completely safe. Otherwise... Otherwise, how could he explain to Sophie's father?
"That blood isn't hers," the doctor replied.
Carl asked, "Has she been violated then?"
This was crucial to him. If Sophie had really been harmed by those men... Carl might never be able to forgive himself. So he wanted to ask the doctor, just to be sure.
Carl's question made the doctor very suspicious. "Are you two really the patient's family?"
Based on the condition and appearance of the patient when she was brought in, there was a strong possibility that these two individuals were the culprits!
"Which room is the patient in?"
Upon hearing that Sophie was fine, Hurley also breathed a sigh of relief. He wanted to go and check on her immediately. After the doctor informed him, Hurley strode quickly towards her room.
Carl also wanted to follow, but he was a step behind Hurley. Hurley closed the door to the room directly and even locked it, leaving Carl outside.
Carl knocked on the door, "Hurley, open the door."
However, Hurley just picked up the notice nearby and waved it in front of the glass on the door. It read, "Hospital prohibits noise."
Carl could only stay outside the door; the room was quite large, and from the outside angle, he couldn't see inside.
Hurley walked over to the bedside. Sophie still had an IV drip in her hand, and her clothes had been changed into hospital attire. She lay there quietly, her face looking pale.
The woman who had been so fierce and aggressive suddenly became peaceful, which Hurley found a bit unsettling.
"Sophie," he called her name, "You were always so harsh with me. Why couldn't you be a little harsh with others? That guy named Adrian, why did you spare him?"
It was true that Hurley had been the harshest with Adrian. But when he went in, Adrian was the one Sophie had been the gentlest with.
Perhaps it was because of their friendship, but while Sophie considered Adrian a friend, what did Adrian consider Sophie?
Sophie furrowed her brow. Hurley reached out, smoothing out the furrow between her brows.
Then, holding Sophie's other hand, Hurley noticed how small her hand was, and how light it felt when he held it, almost like there was no weight to it at all.
Hurley didn't realize how gentle his eyes were at that moment.
"Don't worry, those people will all pay for what they've done," he assured her.
