"You were once a shining star, capturing the hearts of thousands. You had a life many could only dream of," Sophie began, her tone sharp and critical.
"You don't appreciate what you have, yet countless envy you."
"Look at you now—can you still be that star? Do you still have a good life? Why have you become this way because of a man?"
"Have you ever considered why he doesn't like you? Look inward and examine your own faults."
"He left others for you, but remember, he could leave you for someone else. Never have illusions about men. Whatever you choose to do with me, I'll stick with you till the end. But it's a shame you played your cards so poorly."
Matilda felt a jolt of shock and anger.
"No, I can't listen to Sophie," she thought. "Sophie is the winner now, of course, she'd say this. She's probably relishing in my downfall, standing beside Hurley, being protected by him."
Life is inherently unfair. Everyone wants to climb higher, to get what they desire. After all, who doesn't want to get what they want?
She didn't see herself as greedy. She finally managed to get that fool away and had some fantastic nights.
Hurley was so desirable that others were always competing for his attention. If not for Sophie's interference, she wouldn't be in this situation.
Facing Sophie again, Matilda snapped, "Don't celebrate too soon!"
Hurley had the three women escorted away and then declared, "What Matilda said is all lies."
Sophie retorted, "Really? Which part of what she said is untrue?"
"You don't need to listen. There's no one else in my heart, I—"
"You don't have to explain," Sophie interrupted, tying back her long hair. "I'm going to check out of the hospital."
The time she wanted Hurley to explain was five years ago.
Back then, she would have believed anything Hurley said. Regardless of what happened between Hurley and Matilda, if he had told her they weren't involved, she would have naively believed him.
Five years ago, her fate was to be exterminated.
Five years later, Matilda's fate was the same.
She would never believe this man's words again, let alone fall in love with her again. She had no masochistic tendencies, so why should she let Hurley abuse him again?
That was five years ago, and she had changed.
"I'll drive you," Hurley said, hastily grabbing the car keys from Chris.
"No, I'll take a taxi," Sophie replied, her mood low.
Although the three women had been punished, she wasn't feeling particularly elated.
"Aren't I your driver? You've had me drive for you for less than three months," Hurley said, now wanting to be of service to Sophie.
Sophie responded, "No, our agreement is terminated early. You don't need to do anything for me in the future. Consider it a thank-you for saving me last night. I'll continue with my treatment, and you can contact me whenever necessary."
"No!" Hurley looked more distressed than anyone.
"Sophie, this isn't something you can start and stop at will. You can't miss a single day for the next three months, or you'll doubt my integrity," Hurley insisted.
Sophie paused, taking in the situation.
She had thought it was just the three women acting irrationally, but now Hurley seemed just as unhinged.
