Sophie couldn't shake her fear. She paced by the door, longing to rush in and administer first aid.
But she wasn't a doctor in this situation, so she could only ask her assistant to help.
Her hands were stained with blood, the red hue glaringly vivid.
"It's going to be okay, it has to be okay!"
She hadn't even had a chance to really get to know her child. Jake couldn't leave her side.
She had to get her child back, and she couldn't allow Jake to keep following Matilda.
Even if it meant revealing her true identity, she had to make sure that her child stayed with her.
"Hurley, I..."
Before Sophie could finish, Hurley grabbed her wrist.
"Where are you going?"
"To clean up." Hurley led Sophie to the nearby bathroom, turned on the faucet, and carefully washed her hands for her.
Observing Hurley's earnest care, one could be forgiven for thinking that he treated his girlfriend with such tenderness.
"How did you get in there?" Hurley asked after drying his hands.
Hearing this, Sophie replied, "You don't suspect me, do you?"
Given the scene Hurley had walked in on - Sophie seemingly attacking Stephen - it was understandable if he had his doubts.
"I never doubted you. But why did Stephen invite you, and how did you manage to get in?"
"Jake called me and gave me an address. When I arrived there was no answer at the door, so I entered through the balcony and witnessed the scene. Matilda was trying to hurt the child. He was going to strangle Jake to death.
"Jake called you? But he just told me that he didn't..." Hurley paused, remembering seeing Jake outside.
Did Sophie mistake Stephen for Jake?
"No, it was definitely Jake!"
"That wasn't Jake..."
Before Hurley could finish, the doctor interrupted him, "Who are the patient's family members?"
"I am!" Hurley stepped forward quickly, his concern for Stephen obvious.
The severity of Stephen's stab wound seemed more worrying than if Hurley himself had been injured.
"The situation is critical. We're preparing for surgery. The wound is deep and has damaged internal organs. Given the child's young age, the outcome of the surgery is uncertain. We cannot guarantee that the operation will be successful. We need you to sign the "Consent to Surgery" and "Critical Illness Notification" forms.
Given the child's age and the severity of the injury, even with the best medical team in the hospital, there was no guarantee that the child would survive the surgery.
Hearing this, Sophie felt her legs give way beneath her.
"No, we have to save Jake. Why haven't I heard from Amy? Has the hospital approved it?"
Stepping aside, Sophie immediately called Amy to expedite the process.
Hurley, accustomed to signing numerous contracts, found the papers in his hand surprisingly onerous. Even though they were just sheets of paper, they felt as heavy as if they were made of gold.
Hurley did not dare to sign it. After all, if Stephen really did have some shortcomings, how could he explain them to his eldest brother?
He made a promise to his older brother that he would take good care of Stephen.
This is the one and only gift that his elder brother has left to him in the world. He...he can't bear the thought of signing those papers.
"Sir, please sign them as soon as you can before we get ready for the operation."
Hurley was holding the two pieces of paper in his hands. "What's the chance of this going to work, Doctor?"
"Less than ten percent."
"Why is it less than ten percent? Isn't your hospital the most prestigious in the capital? Send in your most powerful doctors!" At this point, Hurley has already lost his mind.
"The best doctor in our hospital is in charge of the operation. But sir, we are only doctors, we are not gods. We have no guarantee of one hundred percent success, unless..."
"Unless what?" Hurley chimed in, anticipating what the Doctor will say next.
"Unless the miracle doctor Night is able to come, they will have that one hundred percent chance of being able to save the child."
