Few in the medical world were unfamiliar with Night's name.
Hurley, however, had a personal connection to Night.
He had once traded five percent of the company's stock to summon Night to heal Anabel.
Night's diagnostic abilities were extraordinary; she had prescribed medicine for Anabel without even seeing her. The treatment proved highly effective, and Anabel remained healthy for an extended period of time.
Given the urgency of the situation, it seemed almost impossible for Night to get to the hospital in time.
But if Night could save Stephen, Hurley was willing to give her all his shares without hesitation.
"Is there any way to contact Night?" Hurley inquired.
Although he had communicated through her assistant before, he still didn't have Night's direct contact information.
"Sorry, sir, but Night is notoriously elusive, and we..."
Before the doctor could finish, another doctor appeared and tapped him on the shoulder. The two doctors stepped aside to talk privately.
After Sophie's call to her assistant, the necessary arrangements had been made, and the hospital was astonished to learn that Night was on her way. Even the dean of the hospital, who was attending an out-of-town meeting, had begun making arrangements to return urgently, eager to meet the renowned miracle doctor Night.
"Hurley, stay with the child. I've left my son at home alone, so I must return immediately," Sophie hastily excused herself.
"You can't leave now, especially since the operation is about to begin. Please wait here."
"I'm sorry, I have to go."
"Would you like me to drive you home?"
"No, Jake's situation is critical. You're needed here, so stay."
Hurley furrowed his brow. Sophie couldn't possibly mistake Stephen for Jake, could she?
As Sophie left, Hurley noticed that the two doctors were still engrossed in their hushed conversation.
The doctor's eyes widened in surprise. "Are you telling the truth now?"
"Yes, I am. Inform the patient's family and have them sign the necessary documents."
Shortly thereafter, the doctor, unable to contain his elation, approached Hurley with a broad smile.
This left Hurley stunned. Given the child's precarious condition, how could anyone find reason to smile?
"Sir, we have some incredible news. The renowned miracle doctor Night is in our hospital right now. After hearing about your child, she has agreed to assist in the operation!"
What a stroke of luck!
Hurley felt like he had been drenched in cold water. After he came to his senses, he asked in disbelief. "Are you telling the truth?"
"Yes, sir. Night is here and is already preparing for the operation. With her involvement, there's every reason to believe the surgery will be successful. Your child will make it through this operation."
Aware of Night's stellar reputation, Hurley immediately signed both the surgical risk and critical illness forms.
He was willing to agree to any terms Night might propose if it meant Stephen's recovery.
Eager to share this miraculous turn of events with Sophie, Hurley dialed her number. But the call went unanswered, ringing insistently with no answer.
Hadn't Sophie gone home? Why didn't she answer?
Though puzzled, Hurley put his concerns aside for the moment. He decided to express his gratitude to Night later, no matter what.
Hurley then called Chris and instructed him to reserve the most luxurious private room in the hospital.
He also asked Chris to prepare some contracts, keeping in mind Night's tendency to get paid handsomely for her work.
