In the operating room, doctors who weren't initially involved expressed a keen interest in observing the legendary healer's unique treatments after learning that Night would be in attendance.
Although none of them had met Night personally, they had read and studied all of her published and academic research. Night's expertise was globally recognized and had the respect of medical professionals around the world.
There had been much speculation in the medical community as to the identity of Night. Some speculated that she was an elderly man in his seventies or eighties, given the depth of her experience and knowledge. Others were of the opinion that the doctor was much younger, possibly in her forties or fifties, a reflection of the importance of experience in her field.
Some even whispered that Night might suffer from mobility issues, which would explain her missing several medical events.
Despite the myriad gossip, Night herself had never confirmed any details, shrouding her identity in an aura of mystery.
Sophie had changed into sterile garb, including a cap and a mask, and was ready to enter the operating room.
She was taken aback when she walked in; the room was almost bursting at the seams with nearly twenty doctors in attendance, which took her by surprise.
But she didn't care about anything else right now. She has to save Jake no matter what. "Update me on the current situation. What are we dealing with?" Sophie asked, her voice, youthful and pleasant.
This took everyone in the room by surprise. The famous Dr. Night was, in fact, a young woman this whole time?
Although her mask covered most of her face, her strikingly beautiful eyes were visible to all.
Watching the stunned expressions, Sophie's frown deepened. "Didn't you listen to me when I asked you? What's the situation right noe?"
The doctors quickly gathered themselves and passed on the vital signs and a variety of other data.
There was silence in the room in acknowledgement of Night's commanding presence.
Upon hearing the details, Sophie's frown deepened. The situation was undeniably serious.
Even as she stood at the operating table, her mind was clouded with doubt. This was her child, after all...
Looking at the pale face of "Jake", Sophie felt a deep pain in her heart. He had been fine that morning, so how could things have been in such a state of decline so quickly?
Summoning all of her strength to remain calm, Sophie steeled herself for the procedure, determined to save the life of her son.
Taking a deep breath to control her emotions, Sophie held out her hand and calmly asked, "Hand me scalpel number 3, please.
Hurley waited outside for an hour. Then two hours...
Five hours had passed, but the lights in the operating room remained on.
Even with Night watching, Hurley couldn't help but feel himself growing concerned.
Stephen's injuries were very serious. On the other hand, Matilda, who had only suffered a cut on her wrist, had already regained consciousness.
She appeared unconcerned about the fate of Stephen, even though he was her own son.
She blamed Sophie for having intervened and questioned why she had even attempted to kill herself in the first place.
However, when she heard that Hurley was outside of Stephen's operating room, Matilda made her way over there, albeit a little unsteadily.
"Hurley..." She called his name, her eyes still filled with fascination.
She was in love with the man and there was nothing she could do about it.
But in contrast to Matilda's adoration, Hurley was looking at her with pure disgust in his eyes.
"Why have you done it? And to a child! Not to mention to your own son! Matilda, are you out of your mind? Stephen is so young!"
"What do you mean, what have I done? Hurley, Stephen is my son. How could I have the heart to do anything to hurt him? I may have cut my own wrists with the knife, but I did not kill Stephen. I didn't do it."
Up to this point, Matilda has been holding on to the last trace of his arms. She wants to blame Sophie.
Even if it means losing Hurley's trust in her, she wants to get Sophie into trouble.
Besides, there is no video surveillance or anything else in the house that could provide her with evidence. Sophie will not be able to clear her name.
