Why did he have to come? Why did he have to come when he got the call and heard about Sophie? He wanted to know that too.
"I promised you that I'll be at your service within three months," Hurley said.
This is a sensible and reasonable answer.
Sophie had no idea what was in store for her, the corner of her mouth was slightly upturned, but her smile was a bit pale. "Let's go then, Driver Walton!"
This place wasn't far from Sophie's home and the drive wouldn't take long.
In the car, Hurley spoke first, "Stephen woke up. He also said it was Matilda who did it."
"Uh-huh," Sophie replied.
I had someone send Matilda to the mental hospital. She'll probably be there for the rest of her life," Hurley continued, giving the information in a detached manner.
Sophie opened her mouth, her tone tinged with mockery, "You're really ready to give her up."
She already has some mental problems. Treating her there is for the best. She won't bother you again in the future."
"Aren't you afraid that your son will hate you if you do that?"
"Huh?" Hurley asked, confused.
"Well, she is still his mother. When Stephen grows up and learns that his father personally sent his mother to a mental institution, won't he hate you for that?"
"Stephen is not my own..."
Before Hurley could finish his sentence, Sophie interrupted, "Never mind that. Anyway, this is what Matilda deserves."
Shortly after they arrived at Sophie's front door, as Hurley started to unbuckle his seat belt, Sophie couldn't resist reminding him to take care of himself. You can't handle everything under the sun. There are a lot of things happening right now that we can't control. But what we can control is our own bodies. You look exhausted. You need to rest."
Hurley's eyes deepened slightly at Sophie's words. "Are you worried about me?" he teased.
Sophie rolled her eyes. "It's just a friendly reminder. Whether you actually do it or not is up to you."
"You know what? You're right. I think I should rest," Hurley admitted. "I'm too tired to drive safely right now."
With that, Hurley got out of the car and followed Sophie. "So, can I come to your place to rest for a bit? After all, I drove you back."
"No!" Sophie's eyes widened in surprise, not expecting Hurley to make such a bold request. "If you're tired, I'll call a chauffeur for you."
"It's not necessary to go to such lengths. Even chauffeurs need to rest. Hurley said. I'll just go upstairs and have a glass of water."
Hurley's eyes softened, giving him a look of vulnerability that tugged at Sophie's heartstrings.
Realizing that he had come all this way to see her, her defenses crumbled. "Okay. But just for a little while," she relented.
With a triumphant smile, Hurley followed behind Sophie as she led the way upstairs.
Damon had gone off to play with Jake, so the house was empty except for the two of them.
"What would you like to drink?" Sophie remembered Hurley's earlier mention that he would like a glass of water.
Hurley's eyes landed on the wine cabinet and he pulled out a bottle of the most expensive red wine they had. "With a collection like that, it wouldn't do any harm to indulge a little, would it?"
Unimpressed, Sophie replied, "Suit yourself. Drink up and leave. I'm going to take a shower."
She had originally planned to shower as soon as she got home, but a call from Jessica had interrupted her.
Sophie enjoyed her shower, the scent of the milky shower gel surrounding her. She changed into her pajamas. She dried her hair and walked out of the bathroom.
To her surprise, Hurley was still there, sitting on the sofa. The light highlighted his disheveled hair, and the bottle of red wine on the coffee table was noticeably emptier than it had been.
At the sound of her footsteps, Hurley turned his attention to where she was sitting. When his eyes met Sophie's freshly showered appearance, a visible lump formed in the back of his throat.
