"Hurley, are you doing this on purpose, making me wait here for hours on end?" Sophie asked, getting more and more frustrated.
Hurley confessed that he had indeed orchestrated the situation, but not to trick Sophie. He had simply wanted to get her to spend a little bit more time at the manor.
"I even skipped out of work to be here with you," Hurley pointed out casually, flipping through the book he was holding in his hand. He had sat there all night but had barely read a few words.
Sophie considered this and said that it would be right, so she decided to wait a little longer.
"If you're tired, you can go to bed. I've already prepared the guest room for you," Hurley said.
The housekeeper next to her also came over and picked up the tea next to her and replaced it with some fresh fruit.
"Yes, Ms. Hades, we have several guest rooms ready for you. Please choose the one you prefer," the butler added.
"You really want me to choose?"
"Uh-huh."
"And I can choose whichever one I want?"
Hurley, sensing a foreboding in Sophie's expression, hesitated before nodding, "Yes, any room."
"In that case, I'll sleep in the master bedroom. You can use the guest room," Sophie explained.
The tea in the butler's hand almost didn't stay there, he wanted to open his mouth. His master doesn't usually allow anyone to enter the master bedroom at will, let alone go to sleep. There's no way his master would agree to this.
The butler also looked at Hurley. He saw Hurley's slightly furrowed brow. He sensed that this was not an easy matter. The master should be angry.
He wanted to make a round and said hastily, "But Ms. Hades, the guest room is also very well prepared..."
But before he could finish, he heard his master say, "It's all right.
The butler froze for a moment. He might be old and hallucinating, but did he just hear Mr. Walton say it was okay for someone to stay in the master bedroom?
"All right then, I'll go to bed," Sophie announced, getting up from the sofa and heading upstairs.
The housekeeper looked at Hurley in disbelief, "But Sir, the master bedroom is not usually..."
"It's fine, let her stay," Hurley repeated.
Lying in bed, Sophie felt like she was in a dream.
Last time, she had been so drunk that she hadn't even remembered where she had fallen asleep. This time, however, she was completely sober and aware of her surroundings.
This place brought back too many memories for Sophie. Every night, at the slightest movement or noise, she would wake up to see if Hurley had come home.
She never locked the door for fear that Hurley would come home to sleep and not be able to open it.
But Hurley rarely came back, and almost never came home.
At first, Sophie thought she couldn't sleep in this room. Surprisingly, she found herself hugging the quilt and drifting off into a deep slumber before she knew it.
At some point, Sophie was awakened by a faint noise.
Caught between dream and reality, she propped herself up and murmured, "Hurley?"
Frozen in the doorway, Hurley hadn't expected Sophie to notice him.
He had waited for her to fall asleep before entering, and now he was caught off guard.
"I forgot you were sleeping here tonight," Hurley admitted, ready to retreat.
But Sophie, still half asleep, whispered, "You're back..."
She had waited every day for Hurley to come home, but he rarely did.
"What?" Hurley strained to hear, and by the faint light from the doorway, he noticed that Sophie seemed to be asleep.
Hurley cautiously approached the bed, only to find that Sophie's eyes were closed.
He put his hand gently on her hair. If Sophie had opened her eyes at that moment, she would have seen the tenderness in his gaze.
She claimed not to like him, yet here she was, calling his name in her dreams.
Women often spoke against their feelings.
Did you have a nightmare? Go back to sleep, I'll watch over you," Hurley reassured her.
His words brought comfort, and Sophie's furrowed brow relaxed as she drifted back into a deep sleep.
