When Adrian woke up, he saw Erika sitting next to him.
"Husband!" Erika called, her voice dripping with sweetness.
She had finally realized her dream of becoming Adrian's wife.
Unaware of Adrian's current condition and unable to humanize him, she still basked in the joy of their marriage.
You're awake, husband! I'm going to call Grandma," Erika chirped.
"Get out!" Adrian's tone was cold and dismissive. "I'm not your husband!"
But Erika promptly produced a marriage license. "Look, this is our marriage license."
Adrian looked at the marriage license, which had a picture of him and Erika married.
"What's going on here? This must be a fake!" He exclaimed.
"If you don't believe me, ask Grandma," Erika insisted. "We are now legally married, and I will stand by your side."
"Get out! Get out!" Adrian shouted.
Erika knew that Adrian would not accept this situation so easily. So she decided to leave first.
On the other hand, Adrian took his cell phone and scrolled through his contacts. There were quite a few people who had sent him messages, but none from Sophie.
Even the ones he'd sent about her, Sophie hadn't replied.
Adrian found the strength to get out of bed. He ignored the marriage certificate Erika showed him, thinking it was a fake.
He wanted to find Sophie.
But just as Adrian was getting up Mrs. Shaw came in from outside.
"Where do you think you're going?" she demanded, her expression as stern as ever.
"None of your business," Adrian snapped.
"Do you still want to find this Sophie? Do you realize she's the reason you're in this condition?" the old lady accused.
"My condition has nothing to do with Sophie!" Adrian replied.
"You are married now. Erika is your wife. Get well and live a good life with her. And don't think about anything else, especially that woman!"
"Impossible! How can I not know if I'm married? Don't try to fool me with a fake marriage license!" Adrian protested.
"When you were in a coma and recovering from your injuries, I arranged for a marriage certificate between you and Erika. It's legally recognized. Just focus on getting better, stop looking for this woman, and I'll turn the company over to you," Mrs. Shaw insisted.
"Grandma! You know very well that I don't like Erika. Why do I have to listen to you every step of the way? Why do I have to do everything you tell me to do? Even if I get married? Why can't I marry the person I really love?"
"I have always acted in your best interest! Your parents died when you were young. Without me, could you have grown up to be what you are today? I gave you the best education and upbringing. I won't allow anyone to ruin you," the old woman said, her face dark and intimidating.
"You were born with the Shaw name and enjoyed the privileges that came with it. You should pay the price, Adrian Shaw. If you continue to pine for this Sophie, don't think I'll go easy on her!" The old woman warned, her eyes dark and malicious as she spoke.
"The child in Erika's womb carries your blood, the bloodline of the Shaw family, and possibly your only heir. If you don't behave yourself, I will have no choice but to hand over the whole Shaw family estate to my great-grandson."
Adrian stared at his grandmother, her white hair hanging like a halo of thorns around her. For the first time, he felt a deep fear of her.
His parents had been dead since he was a boy, and his grandmother had been his entire upbringing. The Shaw family estate was a huge one and was coveted by many. The fact that his grandmother had been able to hold on to it was a testament to her cunning and tenacity.
He felt trapped, like a bird in a cage, unable to fly free. No matter how hard he struggled, he was always held back by invisible strings.
Under the guise of acting in his best interest, she had imprisoned him in a life he had never chosen for himself.
Adrian sank to the ground, then suddenly burst into laughter.
