"Grandpa, Hurley and I haven't even had a chance to get engaged yet! Where did you hear this rumor? Don't believe it!" Sophie exclaimed.
"I have to go now, Grandpa. I have some things to do here. Just know that whatever you heard about Hurley and me is not true!"
Without waiting for an answer, Sophie quickly ended the call. She couldn't believe that Hurley was spreading rumors about her.
Sophie immediately tried to call Hurley to confront him, but he didn't answer.
After thinking about it, Sophie decided to go straight to the Walton Group.
"Hello, do you have an appointment?" the receptionist asked, blocking Sophie's way.
The receptionist found Sophie somewhat familiar, but she couldn't remember where she had seen her before. She was struck by Sophie's beauty but sensed that she seemed distressed or upset.
Given the number of women who came to see Mr. Walton, the receptionist had begun to develop a certain disdain.
"No, I don't have an appointment," Sophie replied.
"I'm sorry, you can't come in without an appointment," she said curtly. "Mr. Walton is very busy."
"Could you please let him know that Sophie Hades is here to see him?" Sophie asked, hoping to get around the appointment rule.
Rolling her eyes, the receptionist replied, "It doesn't matter who you are, you can't come in without an appointment. I've dealt with many women like you before."
"And what kind of woman do you think I am?" Sophie's tone became icy.
The receptionist was taken aback by Sophie's piercing stare. "Ma'am, I don't know what your intentions are with Mr. Walton, but rules are rules. Even the mother of Mr. Walton would have to make an appointment to see her son in here."
Sophie looked around and her eyes landed on a familiar face. She smiled subtly as she approached.
"I guess I must be even more special than Mr. Walton's mother if she needs an appointment and I don't," Sophie said with confidence as she approached Chris.
"Mr. James."
Chris, who had just come out to answer a phone call, was surprised for a moment to see Sophie in the company. "Ms. Hades! Are you here to see Mr. Walton?"
"Yes, but I have heard that everyone has to make an appointment to see Hurley, even his own mother. Am I correct?"
Chris caught the receptionist's eye and gave her a warning look. The receptionist had assumed that Sophie was like the other women, with ulterior motives. But now it seemed that Sophie really knew Mr. Walton.
"Ms. Hades, this has all been a complete misunderstanding. Please ignore what the receptionist has just told you. Mr. Walton is at a meeting right now. Please come with me," Chris said, leading the way.
As Hurley's executive secretary, Chris didn't need to make an appointment to meet with him.
The receptionist stared at Sophie's retreating figure in disbelief. Had she just called Mr. Walton by his first name? Then she shouldn't be talking nonsense in front of her.
She had fought hard for her position in the company and didn't want to jeopardize it.
"Miss, wait!" The receptionist shouted as she rushed after Sophie. "I apologize for my attitude earlier. I really value this job and I need it."
"Don't worry about it. Besides, your performance is judged by your superiors, not me," Sophie replied calmly, deciding not to escalate the situation any further. There was no point in making things difficult for the poor woman.
The Walton Group building in Rustavi was a towering landmark.
Hurley's office was on the top floor. Chris escorted Sophie into the lounge and said, "Mr. Walton is in a meeting. Please wait here for a while. I have a few things to take care of and then..."
"That's all right, Chris. I can find Hurley myself. Go about your business," Sophie interrupted, allowing Chris to leave her alone in the lounge.
It is not as if Sophie would be new to the company. She has been to Hurley's company before. On a previous occasion, she had been waiting for Hurley at home and, after seeing him on TV, had decided to surprise him with a meal.
But she was stopped at the door and couldn't clearly explain her intentions. Overwhelmed with emotion, she had ended up in tears by the time Hurley came to escort her inside the company.
Perhaps out of embarrassment, Hurley had hardly had a word with her for the rest of the day.
