After this incident, rumors about Sophie circulated throughout the company. At that time, Sophie's face was scarred and she was self-conscious about her appearance. As a result, she always covered herself up and avoided showing her face to others.
Nevertheless, her relationship with Hurley became a popular topic of discussion among the staff.
Shaking off those memories, Sophie stood up resolutely.
Familiar with the layout of the office, she confidently made her way to Hurley's office.
If Hurley was in a meeting, he would probably be in the conference room, so she casually walked in that direction.
Hurley's office was spacious, with a large floor-to-ceiling window that offered a panoramic view of half the city. Sophie knew that Hurley liked to stand there a lot.
As she approached the office, she was surprised to see Hurley inside.
Hurley was sitting in front of his desk, absorbed in his computer and surrounded by a pile of documents. He seemed to be deep in official business.
Wasn't he supposed to be in a meeting? Chris had no reason to deceive them. Could the meeting have ended early?
Without hesitation, Sophie walked up and knocked on the office door.
Hurley looked up as he heard the knock, his eyes widening in surprise as he saw Sophie through the glass door.
Why is Sophie at the company?
Before he could say anything, Sophie had opened the door and entered, then raised her voice.
"Hurley, what did you say to my grandpa? Why is Grandpa setting a wedding date for us? And why didn't you make it clear that we just slept in the same house, not in the same bed?"
Hurley couldn't answer Sophie's questions at that moment.
His eyes withdrew from Sophie's and looked at the computer screen in front of him. The faces on the screen mirrored the wide-eyed astonishment of his own.
Hurley sighed and rubbed his temples, "Meeting adjourned.
This time it was Sophie's turn to be speechless. Had he really been in a meeting all this time?
"I... You..." Sophie stammered, not knowing what to say.
Hurley ended the videoconference, "I guess it won't be long before the whole company knows we slept together."
"I ......" The blush on Sophie's face spread to the base of her ears. "I saw you here and thought you had finished your meeting. Why didn't you say anything? Aren't meetings usually held in the conference room?"
"This is a management meeting for the branch, where we discuss the performance of the current quarter and set the goals for the next quarter," Hurley clarified.
"Then... did everyone hear what I just said?" Sophie's face turned a deep shade of red in embarrassment at the possibility of that.
"If you'd spoken any louder, the people downstairs might have heard you," Hurley replied nonchalantly.
Sophie hadn't expected him to react that way, but she didn't want to be misunderstood either, "Why don't you reopen the videoconference? I can explain things to them."
"Clarify what? That you didn't stay at my house or that we didn't share a bed?" Hurley asked, his tone devoid of emotion.
Sophie was at a loss for words to say.
"Even if you explain, it doesn't mean they'll believe it. Sometimes explanations just make things more complicated," Hurley continued in a serious manner, with no intention of clarifying things.
"So you're not going to explain anything?" Sophie asked, confused by his answer.
Ignoring her question, Hurley asked, "Would you like to have something to drink? I can have someone send it over here."
No, this is not what I came for. I tried to call you, but you didn't answer, so I came to the company. My grandfather called me earlier. What did you tell him? Have you agreed to this marriage?"
Hurley wasn't in a hurry to answer Sophie's question, but he pursed his lips tightly, and after two seconds he opened his mouth.
"Did you agree to it as well?"
