The receptionist allowed the two children to go up, and as Sophie watched them get into the elevator, a wave of inexplicable emotion washed over her.
She must find out who this child is.
Sophie approached the receptionist, "Excuse me, those two children who just came in are..."
Since Sophie had been introduced by Chris, the receptionist naturally recognized her.
"These are Mr. Walton's children," she replied.
Hurley's son?
This ... how could this be Hurley's son?
Sophie was astonished. Wasn't Stephen his child?
Had the company known all along that Hurley and Stephen recognized each other? Or did Hurley have another son as well?
The name 'Jake' echoed in Sophie's mind, casting doubt on the identity of the child in front of her.
Is it Damon, or is it...
"Is it Jake?" Sophie finally opened her mouth.
The receptionist gave her a look that said, you already know the answer to your question and yet you still ask?
Sophie's grip tightened. "Is it really Jake?"
"What business do you have with young Master Walton?" The receptionist looked at her warily.
Sophie's mind raced. The child's face had looked so much like Damon's.
Could it be that Jake and Damon looked alike?
They were both her sons, and they were triplets, so if Damon could look so much like Hurley, why couldn't he look like Jake?
It began to dawn on Sophie that Damon seemed to have changed quite a bit after they had returned to the United States. Damon seemed to have become a lot more understanding and a lot calmer.
Now it was likely that the boy she had been under the impression that Damon was might not have been him at all.
And no wonder Jake and Damon got along so well - unnaturally well.
Sophie had grown up with Damon. Although Damon was well-liked and many people enjoyed his company, there were very few people who could truly be friends with Damon.
For Jake to form such a close bond with Damon in such a short time, it seemed there was more to the story.
Sophie quickly turned around and got on the elevator. She guessed that the two kids must have gone to Hurley's office. She had to go back to take a look and confirm her suspicion.
On the top floor of the building, there was only Hurley's office and the office of Secretary Chris.
The other secretaries in the President's office were on the lower floors, so it was usually quiet on that level.
Sophie watched discreetly as the two children entered Hurley's office.
Hurley was just about to continue with the meeting when there was a knock on the door.
"Come in," Hurley said.
The two children entered, "Daddy."
Hurley had a surprised look on his face, "What are you two doing here? Where's Great Grandma?"
"Grandma went to pick up Stephen. We were afraid that Stephen would be upset when he saw us, so we came to find you," Jake explained.
Today, Stephen was close to being discharged from the hospital, but still needed time to recover.
Without a mother, Stephen had to stay with his grandmother.
In light of the strained relationship between Stephen and his grandparents from his mother's side, the co-residence was certainly not an ideal situation.
So Jake and Anabel had returned for the day.
"Well, you guys play here for a while. Daddy has some business he needs to take care of."
"Okay." Jake and Anabel were both very good kids. With the knowledge that Hurley was busy, neither of them would be a nuisance to him.
Jake took two books from the nearby bookshelf and sat down next to Hurley to read.
Sophie stood in the distance, watching the three of them through the glass door.
Jake's face was clear and calm, confirming to Sophie that he wasn't Damon.
Damon would never sit so quietly or read so intently. Damon was restless and had no interest in reading.
The scene was heartwarming: Hurley was engrossed in his work, while the children sat peacefully and did not argue with each other.
Feeling a surge of emotion, Sophie decided to call Damon.
"Hello, Mommy," Damon replied promptly.
Watching Jake in Hurley's office, Sophie remained silent. It wasn't her Damon.
"Mommy?" Damon sounded confused, "Why aren't you talking?"
"It's okay, I'll call you back later, sweetheart," Sophie said before ending the call and continuing to stare at Jake through the glass door.
She bit her lips tightly, not letting any of her emotions show. She was finally going to see his son.
They must have had some time together before, but she had no idea who he was. She even had confused Stephen with Jake.
How could she not have thought that Jake had been by her side all along?
At that moment she felt a sharp pain in her heart. She wanted to rush in and hug her son, but that would alert Hurley.
In this case, it was very likely that Hurley had already seen Damon. He just hadn't recognized him.
"Ms. Hades? Ms. Hades?" Chris' voice interrupted her thoughts.
Sophie quickly sat up. "Mr. James."
"Mr. Walton is still in a meeting. If he hasn't finished yet, could you please wait a little longer?" Chris informed her.
"I've already met him, that's fine. I'll say goodbye now. And please don't tell Hurley that you saw me."
Sophie didn't want anyone to know about her discovery, and since Jake hadn't told her the truth, he must have had his reasons.
Since there was a striking resemblance between Jake and Damon, it was possible that they already knew that she was their mother. Jake chose not to acknowledge her, and perhaps she was not ready to accept the reality of her mother either.
After all, she hadn't been there for Jake the last couple of years, so if Jake had a grudge against her, it was understandable.
She decided to pretend that she didn't know for now. Then she would set up the three kids so that if they wanted to talk about it, they would tell her willingly.
"Huh?" Chris asked, not understanding why Sophie had said so.
Sophie clarified, "Just make sure Hurley doesn't find out about what I saw."
Understanding dawned on Chris. "I understand.".
"Thank you."
Sophie quickly left the company but found herself sitting in her car in the underground parking lot for a long while. She noticed Hurley's car parked nearby.
It was quite some time after the office had closed when Sophie finally saw Hurley holding the hands of the two children, heading towards his car.
The glimpse was brief, and she didn't see clearly.
Just then, her phone rang. It was Damon calling. "Mommy, why aren't you back yet?"
"I'll be home soon."
"Hurry up, okay?"
"Alright." Sophie started her car and drove home. She believed that one day, she would be able to fully recognize Jake.
Upon arriving home, Sophie found Damon sitting on the sofa, engrossed in his computer game.
"Damon?"
Mommy!" Damon exclaimed, jumping up while still holding his computer, "You're just in time. Look at this cool game I made. Isn't this fighting pose awesome?"
Seeing Damon's excitement, Sophie looked at his face. Though it was the same face, she now found it much easier to recognize.
Her own son wouldn't look so calm and collected; that had to be Damon. Ignoring the computer, Sophie hugged Damon tightly.
"Baby, Mommy has missed you so much."
