"Mommy." Damon didn't dare move a muscle when she was hugged, then she went over to Sophie and gave her a kiss on the cheek, "I missed you too.
Even though Sophie had a lot of things she wanted to ask her son, in the end she didn't do it.
The next morning, Sophie rose early and prepared a hearty breakfast with her own hands.
In addition to her own portion and Damon's, she also packed two extra portions for them.
"This is for Jake and Anabel, let them try it too," she said.
"Sure thing, Mommy!" Damon agreed enthusiastically.
Sophie, on the other hand, sent a message to Hurley, "Are you free for lunch? Let's eat together."
When Hurley read the message, he was already in the office.
Chris was still giving him a report on today's schedule, which was very packed, in addition to the endless meetings in the morning and afternoon, and even at lunchtime and in the evening.
The noontime engagement was with an esteemed foreign partner.
But when Hurley saw the invitation Sophie had sent, he said, "Reschedule the lunch.
"Mr. Walton, the lunch meeting is very important. If we reschedule it, the other party might take offense," Chris cautioned.
"Reschedule it. My decision is final," Hurley said in a tone that left no room for negotiation.
On the other hand, Chris was a little curious. What exactly was the reason for Hurley's insistence on the postponement of such an important engagement?
"Should we adjust the rest of the day's schedule as well?" Chris inquired.
"Let's move the afternoon meeting to tomorrow as well." Hurley decided, unsure if he would be able to return in time.
"Understood," Chris promptly began rearranging Hurley's appointments.
Hurley stared at his screen and wondered how many words Sophie was composing that she hadn't even finished typing yet.
Sophie, on the other hand, glanced at the two words she had written, but struggled to formulate an answer.
She had intended to invite Hurley to lunch to discuss their child, but Hurley's earlier comment had made her question what she intended to say.
After much hesitation, she deleted her message without sending anything.
Just as Sophie was contemplating her next move, Hurley's call came through.
Her hand shook as she answered.
Just as she put the phone to her ear, she heard Hurley's voice laughing softly. The man's voice was very deep, with a persuasive quality to it.
And without saying a word, he had already brought a blush to her cheeks.
For a while, there was a tense silence. All that could be heard on the other end of the line was their synchronized breathing. It is obviously nothing, but it is full of a kind of ambiguous taste.
Sophie, who couldn't stand it any longer, broke the silence. "Is something wrong?"
"Didn't you just ask me out?" Hurley's voice was teasing, obviously in high spirits.
"I only asked if you were free for lunch. How did that translate into me asking you out?" Sophie replied, trying to maintain a serious tone.
Her words, which she had meant seriously, seemed less formal and more playful coming from Hurley.
"Inviting me to dinner doesn't count as asking me out anymore? Ms. Hades, yesterday you warned me not to talk nonsense in front of Grandpa. Now you're inviting me to dinner? I can't figure out what you're up to, Ms. Hades," Hurley teased.
The cell phone was pressed to her ear and the voice was transmitted directly into the cochlea, as if she was leaning over and talking into her ear. It was a stark contrast to talking face to face.
Sophie's ears turned red. She was sure that Hurley would think too much about this.
"I was thinking that Damon is about the age to start kindergarten. I wanted to discuss your experiences with him," Sophie quickly made up an excuse. "If you're busy, forget it."
But the truth was that she actually wanted to find out some things about Jake from Hurley. She also wanted to see any photos he might have of Damon.
"Talking about experiences, huh? If you ask me, it depends on your sincerity."
"What do you mean by 'sincere'?" Sophie was worried about what Hurley might ask.
"If you're going to invite me to dinner, you should at least cook it yourself," Hurley said.
After Hurley finished, Sophie paused for a moment. Was that all? "Sure, what would you like to eat?" she asked.
"Can you guess?" Hurley didn't elaborate and promptly hung up.
Feeling a little uneasy about her dinner invitation, Sophie realized that Hurley was probably anxious to get out of work and go to her place. But it was only nine o'clock - quite early.
The meeting, which was supposed to last two hours, was shortened to half an hour by Hurley.
Because of the time pressure, some people often made mistakes in reporting their work, and everyone thought that they would suffer as a result.
Everyone knew that Hurley's mind was like a supercomputer. He remembered details impeccably, managed tasks efficiently, and was exacting with his subordinates. To make a mistake under his scrutiny could be career-ending.
And today, this person had made a mistake and was anxiously waiting for Hurley's reaction. His heart tightened in anticipation of being fired.
But to his surprise, Mr. Walton was distracted by his cell phone and didn't seem to hear what he said.
He thought that Hurley hadn't heard him, and was just about to find it again when he heard Hurley point out where he was wrong.
The person who said he was wrong was scared to death, thinking that he might not be able to be the manager who knew that Hurley only said, "Consider this a one-time oversight."
Mr. Walton didn't get angry. On the contrary, he was in a good mood, which is not like Mr. Walton at all.
After the meeting, as everyone was leaving the conference room, they were in disbelief.
"Didn't Mr. Walton seem unusually lenient today?"
"I was sure I'd be reprimanded or have my bonus cut. I can't believe he let it slide."
"Didn't you notice that Mr. Walton was looking at his phone the whole time during the meeting? This meeting of ours is supposed to last almost two hours, but it ended much earlier, not even an hour has passed. If you didn't know better, you'd think Mr. Walton was in a hurry to be with his daughter!"
"Is it really his daughter? I heard somewhere that the last time a girl came to see Mr. Walton in his office, and the two of them kissed each other, right there in his office!"
"Did you also notice that Mr. Walton has a tooth mark on his neck? It looks like there was some rough stuff going on between him and the girl!"
"Do you think we'll have a new boss's wife here?"
In the conference room, the heads of each department, all had a heart for gossip.
What Hurley didn't know was that half an hour after he left, the group in the conference room was still engrossed in their speculations.
Meanwhile, Hurley, having finished the meeting, was anxious to leave. He grabbed his car keys and went downstairs to his car.
Just as he was about to drive away, he overheard the receptionist talking to other department employees.
"Francesca, your hairpin is so beautiful! It looks like a limited edition from a high-end brand."
"Yes, this is my friend who waited in line for hours just to get this for me. It's priceless."
"Oh my God, I'm so jealous! All the girls in our department would love to have one of these."
"Then tell your boyfriends to get in line for this, too. Anyway, there's only one chance a day to win it, so it's not too late."
Hurley's footsteps stopped and looked at the two little girls walking away.
"Wait." Hurley called out.
