"My goodness, where did you go so late? Were you out trying to impress the girls?" Jessica teased as she looked at Jake and reached out to pinch him on the cheek.
In the past, Damon had always managed to dodge Jessica's pinching attempts.
But this is Jake. And being a bit naive, he let her do it, his big eyes full of innocence.
Sophie was quick to intervene, rescuing her son from the playful clutches of Jessica and pulling him into a tight embrace. "Come here, sweetie. Come to Mommy."
She planted several kisses on Jake's face.
This was her good boy, not the mischievous brat that was Damon!
Had she known earlier, Sophie would have showered him with even more affection.
Did the heavens hear her prayers and send Jake to her?
She can't believe it! Her baby is so good!
"I want a kiss too!" Jessica joined in.
And with that, Jake found himself sandwiched between the two, allowing them to kiss and kiss and kiss him. And for a while there, he didn't know whether he should be happy or angry.
What's gotten into Mommy today? Why is she so affectionate all of a sudden?" Jake thought to himself, feeling a little overwhelmed by the attention.
After enduring the affectionate onslaught for a while, Jake finally broke free and said, "Mommy, I'm going to go wash my hands.
"Sophie, my grandson is being unusually sweet today. He doesn't usually let me kiss him like that," Jessica commented, obviously pleased with the warm welcome.
He's such a beautiful boy. When he grows up, I'm sure he'll capture a lot of hearts," Jessica thought.
Watching Jake head for the bathroom, Sophie whispered to herself, "He's not Damon."
"What did you say?" Jessica asked, thinking she had misheard.
Sophie quickly corrected herself, "I mean, my baby has always been so good!"
Jessica raised an eyebrow, finding it hard to reconcile Sophie's description with the mischievous Damon she had come to know. Damon was hardly the picture of obedience.
Jessica didn't stay with Sophie for long and soon left.
Not long after that, Jessica decided to leave as well.
Sophie then approached Jake, who smelled fresh from his laundry. "Baby, how about sleeping with Mommy tonight?"
"Yes, Mommy!" Jake agreed, noting the unusual gentleness in his mother's eyes. She's not usually like that.
But that tenderness belonged to Star. He felt guilty, as if he were taking Star's place in receiving this affection.
"Baby, you and Jake are so close. Can you help Mommy apologize to him?"
"Why would you apologize to me, Mommy?" Jake looked confused.
"Because Mommy made a mistake. I got Stephen mixed up with Jake," Sophie explained as she apologized to her son.
She knew that the child in her arms was Jake, and she deliberately mentions this excuse to Jake, who is pretending to be Damon.
"The last time, Mommy went to Grandma's house. The person she saw was Stephen, and she ended up mistaking him for Jake. At the time, Stephen said something that made Mommy think that Jake didn't like her, and it was only later that Mommy realized that she had made a mistake. So I want you to apologize to Jake for me, please?"
Jake shook his head angrily, "Mommy, you don't have to apologize to Jake. Jake wasn't mad at all!"
Jake was so happy to hear that. So Mommy must have mistaken him for another child, and she doesn't hate him!
Jake gave Sophie a big hug, "Mommy, I love you, Mommy!"
Even though he was pretending to be Damon, Jake wanted so badly to tell Sophie that he wasn't Damon, that he was Jake.
He thought about it, but decided against it for now for fear that it might scare her.
"You're such a good boy. Mommy loves you, too," Sophie whispered as she planted a loving kiss on Jake's forehead.
